I took three photos yesterday, all planned ahead of time. When I was finished, I said to myself, "Gosh, that was fun!" I'll pick up the film this afternoon. I doubt that I'll submit any to 1X.com--we'll see--but I really did have fun.
First I went out before dawn with my 4x5 inch view camera to photograph an old Dallas hotel that is soon to be torn down. Second, I created a special rig for my 35mm film camera in order to take a self-portrait while exercising (can't say more just now). And third, I created a still life outdoors, again using my view camera.
More on shooting with my view camera:
I don't own a light meter at this time, but I've discovered that my wife's little Panasonic point-and-shoot serves that purpose very well and is even a passable Polaroid substitute. And in the old days, when film & processing were cheap, I thought nothing of firing off a bracket of five exposures. But now, at almost $5 per click, I find myself being a bit more conservative...if I can't get the shot in one exposure, I feel guilty. If I get it in one exposure, but the film is going to be left to gather dust, I feel guilty.
Someday I'll own a nice DLSR and then I will be happy. Yes, I know I'm inviting lectures on how the camera shouldn't matter, but I'm 65 years old...can't I have something I simply *want* once in my life without getting that lecture?
I won't lecture you on the camera doesn't matter, but I will say that you should go out and get your dSLR now. No sense in waiting. Just go get one! :-)
Oh, and I was going to post my reject here, the one I entered as a Free Study last month, but it accidently got accepted.
Since I joined in January 2008, I've only submitted 10 shots; 4 rejected, 6 accepted.
And when I last submitted a number of months ago, I had like 4 or 5 free slots a week. Not that I ever used them, but it's kind of disheartening to log on now and see I get only one slot.
My most recent reject from 1x.com. Just when you think you are on a roll.....bam. I like the image but really was in doubt that it would be published. Did a bit of homework...and they have about 6 bride/wedding images published there, out of the thousands. Not the most popular subject matter on 1x.com. Oh vey....
Yep, they reduced the number of upload slots as the screeners were getting overloaded.
It's slightly more complex than that. It's a system of earn and reward. ie, you have to review a certain number of submissions in order to "earn" more slots. Likewise, if you want a photo critiqued, you have review a certain number of other artists pictures.
Basically they are trying to ensure people "participate" rather than simply "submit". I think it's fair myself.... and do.
I quite agree, it's more than fair. It rewards those who are prepared to put in a bit of effort. I seldom submit anything, but do take part in screening a lot. Keep getting bonus upload spots (which expire after 1 week) and never use them!

If I give you my wife's cell number, will you please give her a call? More seriously, we are working on getting out of debt, so just getting one doesn't work because I don't have $$thousands just lying around with nothing better to do. I will have to earn it.

This is the first time I have seen this thread and website. I was browsing the 1x website and came across this young lady. She does some interesting and powerful work. So young and talented!
Nice to see this thread come back into view.
I like the reject better than the published work...it's more subtle...nice and smooth tones.
I guess that must be why I can't get one published. lol
this reminds me, i should probably try and enter another photo at some point. i did one and decided i should hold out until something special comes along. you only get three chances to get published right? then you have to pay?

No, that's not correct...
You can be a free member as long as you want to. But you get more upload slots if you become a paying member...

i thought it was something like that. guess i got my wires crossed
I went back into my old files and found a few that have a chance like the one above taken in '07. A few are homeless portraits, that I like but I'm hesitant to show them. 1x seems to like gnarled people.
