Just stayed up to see the entries for the Painting with Light challenge. I was a little dissappointed that most of the shots were of things illuminated interestingly, but very few that resembled what I took to be the actual point of the challenge... Anyone ever seen that portrait of Picasso painting in the air with a flashlight? I was hoping for some more stuff along those ligns.
There are many types of shot that are considered "painting with lights" not just the sterotypical kinds. Not everybody has a "B" mode on there camera :(

We all have different takes on each challenge. That's one of the strengths of DPC.
I only hope that people don't vote down simply because the interpretation doesn't match their own. It is a vain hope, however.
LOL, you can say that again; I'm getting beat bloody, and I'm sure a good bit of it is on account of it being "atypical". I don't think it's a GREAT shot, but neither is it sorth 4.XXX and falling. Ick, I'm going to bed.
I agree with eaphelps.
Even if you used a flashlight to illuminate your subject, but it doesn't look anydifferent than a spot light, it's garbage for the challenge. Many people consider the sun as a moving light source; granted it does move pretty damn fast, but it's 7 light-years away!!!
It is really hard to guess what is going to please people these days. I am a bad guesser. I thought my image is very average. I basically took it just for fun (first challenge for me this year). But it is actually doing quite well right now.
I know the first 20-30 or so scores are usually high, but the scores will not drop more than 1 whole point from there on. So it surprises me that it is doing so well.
So don't despair. Enjoy the experience you are getting.

I almost unsubmitted my photo but my girlfriend convinced me to keep it in. I knew it probably wouldn't do well and I figured correctly. Whether you like my shot or not I still think it was fun to play around with long exposures and light again. I'll take my 3.xxx or whatever and live with it.
banmorn: ooo..thats cool I would've given it high marks, however considering everyones reaction to my comment im probly gonna go back through and re-rate everything tomorrow with some different criteria in mind, seems like everyones getting "beat to death" as the phrase of the moment seems to be, including me! haha.

I hope that the sun is still only 93 million miles (8.3 light-minutes) away and that the Sun and Earth haven't moved apart. If they had, that would explain why it's so damn cold here though. Prolly get a LOT colder tho.
Having been slated in the votes for my lightpainting shots in the past, the perfect challenge comes along and I run out of time to enter!!
I actually think the point of the challenge is to illuminate the subject with a non-static light source (which is actually more difficult) rather than depict the light source. Some of them are very good I think.
There are some pictures in this challenge which are absolutely beautiful and conform very well to the challenge! I enjoyed voting this challenged and I made more comments on this challenge than any other before.
Granted there were also some very poor images there, but the good ones made up for it :)
I found bulb mode pretty useless on my 300D because you need to press the shutter to start/stop it, and it shook the camera way too much. I tried a number of shots with 15 or 20 sec shutters, but in the end opted for a 30 sec shot.

Its still apparent that some people do not know what the painting with light technique is all about. Imagineer ( Jon ) hits the nail on the head with his definition. Here is link to Emil Schildt ( some nudity ) His work is some of the best using the PWL technique.
Their are variations of course, using flashes with colored gels, sparklers, etc. I saw some good examples of this technique in this challenge, hopefully the people that dont understand the technique will research it a bit before voting.
There are alot of beautiful shots for this challenge... I didn't vote as high though.

I am doing better for this challenge than the others I entered. I was expecting to come out of this with a 3 or a 4, and have comments that say I need to fix levels and contrast or whatnot. Still have lots of time and comments to receive... but I have a good feeling about this!

Yep, it would be fine. Unfortunately I don't have one at the moment, which means I tend to use the shutter delay feature. Perfectly servicable in most occasions.

I too was confused with what PWL was. I had several ideas, but after it was suggested that I just post what I was happy with, I did just that!
To All: don't lose heart when getting low scores! Pretty much everyone (with a very few exceptions) here is an extremely talented photographer. Keep in mind that your photo is being scored against the best out there in the world...definately a little more challenging than the community art shows we have all participated in. I think even a 4 or 5 still entails a very excellent photograph when compared to the snapshots that the majority of the people in the world take!

If you open the shutter with the lens covered, then remove the cover, you can eliminate the effect of the vibration from mirror slap.
