after my 1st time i didnt join for long as it wasnt a serious challange, loads of submissions which didnt fit the guidelines.

My definition is inanimate objects that are placed in a setting of some sort.
I also don't think that finding something where it lies and taking a picture of it is a still life. It seems like the arrangement is a large part of what makes it a still life.

So far as finding something lying there and taking a picture of it... well, it could work, but it's hard to say. Of the two comments, one likes my picture very much and the other found fault with my choice of perspective/composition - so maybe I'm wrong about the reasons for the low votes. The topic description said to be creative with a still life and I thought I did that (within reason) but everybody's tastes are different. So it goes.

I guess I missed the boat too. After reading this thread, and people's definition of "still life", I don't feel as bad about my low score. Oh well.... I'm still learning..

What I'm seeing is a lot of repetitive images from previous challenges - same concepts, same execution, same technique - I bet I can even name the author that aren't even close to being a still life. It's kind of boring.
Also I'd like to chime in here on what is or isn't. Still life can be viewed as a inanimate or animate object in an arranged or natural setting. Still life as a genre is more asthetic than artistic - more impression than impact - a natural blend of shape, color and/or form. It's not a genre particularly suited to photography as it is for oil/water color. The forms and shapes should be gentle not angled or sharp and the colors should be soft and complimentary, not jarring or at odds.
But I can see I'm not alone! (though it was at 4.03 at one point); I do have one comment which sheds some light on why it isn't doing so well but I'm standing by it - it's an image I'm very happy with.
The argument of a still life being inatimate objects that are setup by hand is valid. I did that with mine but tryed to make it look as though it wasn't so maybe that's hurting me. Or maybe my image is shit? LOL

This is so wrong, it's painful - I've filed a protest with wiki about it. By no stretch of the imagination can Irving Penn be considered a still life photographer and Edward Weston? Damn, how stupid was this author?

I think all this jibba jabba from the people who are pissed about having low scores is scaring the people with higher scores from posting in this thread. There are some really great still life images in this challenge. I thought mine was a good image myself and am doing rather badly but it's a score that I am familiar with so I'm not gonna post and act surprised about it.
I love to look through the threads at the challenge end to see who praises and/or talk's negatively about their image and put a rant to a name.
So to all those 6+ scorers out there please by all means post up.

Thanks Tom - I totally agree. The pictures that I am still questioning definitely don't fit the aesthtic that I know classic still life paintings are made of. When I decided to enter this challenge I went into it trying to fit the mood with color and form more than anything else.
and then.... well I won't tell you what I think might have gone wrong. But a good still life requires a lot of thinking.

The challenge description said to "be creative" so... that's probably why some are not technically "still life"... also some people obviously have no idea what a still life is. I did research before posting.. : ))
