Not that I'm trying to say the media isn't hyping it up as much as they can. I work with Mexican immigrants and Mexican-American families (along with migrant workers from Texas and Florida) and everybody in our department is emailling like crazy to figure out the best defense... My inbox has not been this flooded in a long time.

Good point. In that respect, it's more like the 1918 Spanish Flu, but apparently far less deadly. Still, I think most people see a death toll of 152 or whatever as a terrifying number and just don't realize how many people succumb to regular flu (or malaria) every year.

Oh yeah, I wonder if the unusual geographic susceptibility to flu-induced pneumonia is related to tobacco use, or maybe the fact that Mexico City has (has had) some of the very worst air pollution in the world -- I would say that anyone who has lived there a year or more should probably be considered to have a compromised respiratory system by US standards.

My suspicion (not founded on evidence at all) is we have been lucky so far and the index cases that have been linked to the US were mild variants. The flu does mutate fairly rapidly (although not as rapidly as some other viruses) and it's possible there are multiple strains already in Mexico. The deadly one remains in Mexico and hasn't spread internationall yet. Over half the US cases are linked to one school in New York (28 cases) and that could be traced to one single case. Perhaps that was a mild variant. If you subtract those 28 cases, you are left with about 20 cases identified so far and it's possible the small number have kept us from seeing the expected deaths (roughly 2) due to statistical fluke. It is also possible some of those 20 cases are also linked to the New York school due to travel, etc.
I'm hoping I'm one of the few remaining survivors immune to it and left to re-create society while fighting off evil. That would be kind of cool. Too bad Walmart is all out of ammo!

I remember that one with - had Morgan Freeman as well didnt it?.. I went to the pictures to see that when it came out and I thought it was a great film, but recently saw it again on telly and thought it was pretty average the second time around..
