:) There are a ton of "special" locations out there, but they all require backpacking. I do recall the two times I've been that the northern areas around Mammoth are moderately less travelled than the Southern portion. Still, tourists will abound.
I have never had the time to get lost in the back country. :(
Off road: Blacktail road/path, on the Northern end of the park, its on the official map... a 1way unpaved road, some nice scenery - wide open at parts. Where i took this, one of my faves :)
PS: do bath in the hot-springs heated rivers, makes your skin feel great! There are bathing areas set up at the North entrance of the park as well as along Firehole river I believe...
AP, perusing your Glacier National Park photos reminded me how much I need to get up there someday. Not to derail, but how long did you spend in the park?
Try the hike from Lewis Lake to Shoshone Lake (Shoshone Lake Trail); the hike to Specimen Ridge in Lamar Valley is great (standing petrified trees); hike to Delusion Lake on the south end of Yellowstone Lake is quite nice; Norris Geyser Basin is my favorite area for hot springs and the best area for very large elk; Dunraven Pass from canyon Village to Gardner is wonderful; The trail to Mt. Steveson east of Lake Yellowstone has excellent views; if you really want a good long hike, try the hike to the Bechler River to Colonnabe Falls (100ft high) in the SW part of the park; there are so many other areas.
Just remember Grizzlies are seen on all of these trails!
I spent a total of 4 nights in Glacier... 3 nights back-country camping, 1 night camping out of car. I wish I did back-country in Yellowstone, but we were so beat up! Good luck Ursula I'm looking forward to see what you bring back.

Quick question since I am also going to Yellowstone. When shooting the pools and springs (not sure what they are called) like the Morning Glory, will I need a polarizer?

When shooting any pool or body of water I'd suggest having a polarizer.
