I still think the abridged is better (as K10D said, personal preference). Maybe because I read it first. Didn't King "update" the unabridged version prior to publication to try and make it more current?

I think he did that with newer versions of The Gunslinger, but I don't recall anything about The Stand. I wouldn't be surprised though, if there were little additions/updates/etc. added.
ETA: The Dark Tower series is another one about a decaying world. heh. Although it gets horribly bad by the last book.

The newspaper didn’t say if Solis had swine flu or not.

Sorry if it seemed I was going off topic, I wasn't. I was in no way trying to introduce politics into this discussion but when I seen this report it made things a little scarier. I was pointing out the fact that a distinguished archaeologist had died from what maybe the sine flu. Also pointing out how close the President of the United States was in relation to the virus. I am glad he did not get sick and pray for the wellness of everyone in this country, Mexico, Canada, and any place that maybe effected.

Yup, he bought it from the late 70s/early 80s into early 90s.
And then his other `end of the world` story at this end of his career called "Cell" fricking awful book that one, recoverd some lost ground with "Duma Key" - but nothing compares to the brilliance of the Dark Tower series, I never wanted that one to end.

Hmm...I have the DVD of the mini-series. I might have to pop that in. Its a lot easier to scare the hell out of my wife that way... :)

I live in Fair Oaks, CA... yesterday morning one of our schools sent out an e-mail notifying parents that the school is closed until further notice because one student came down ill suspected of having swine flu. By yesterday evening, the school was reporting that there are 7 other students that may be infected. Today it was confirmed that the first student has the Swine Flu - the student recently went on a trip to Cancun.
It travels quick.
We are being told that as soon as you have any sign of symptoms to go to your doctor. There is a medication they can give you that will pretty much take care of it. At least this strain hasn't mutated beyond our meds - yet. (I can't believe I just said that... cancel cancel cancel)

They are saying on TV that we have 3 posible cases in Wisconsin, However none have been comfirmed as of yet. We were in California last week so I was a tad worried at first but it has been a week since we left there and no signs of sickness apart from the cold I caught in the mountains on the way home, stuffed up head and my ears have been blocked for a week. Everything sounds like a drum inside my head.
Well us near to the Mexican border are going to get hit first. So, if you dont hear from me again, I took Slippy's suggestion and went on a pig vengeance rampage.
