I'm on a gap year next year, so would coincide perfectly. Pretty sure my rents wouldn't want me to though...they want me doing gap yr stuff through a 'reputable organisation' and all that. I'd much rather just find a friend and go exploring for a while, but i guess i gotta respect my parents seeing as i won't yet be 18, and dont really wanna to worry them too much.
If you get something organised with some people, drop me a line and it may be i can join you for a while..i'm hoping to spend some time in a place in southern spain (probably nr begining of yr...sometime during jun-septish) so might be able to join you for some spanish travelling, but if i manage to get an engineering work placement, that'll take up the majority of sept-may, and any travelling will be in the 2 summers. (but i'll be considerably richer :p)
er, yeah, so basically, i probably wouldnt be able to join you for the whole thing, but do let me know your plans and i may join you for a bit
If, however, you were thinking of south america rather than europe, i would be tempted to try and join you for longer, but won't know about work placements for a while now

I have been thinking about South America as well...I'm just not too sure how safe it is, but I guess tha's what makes it exciting right? As of right now, I'm pretty sure I'm going to Europe...but my mind might change in the next few weeks, who knows.

I reckon you could do it alone, meet up with DPC people in various countries who would be willing to put you up, show you around their lives and then advise you where else you could travel around. Look at the map that shows where everyone lives ( someone find me the link!) - we are all over the world!
plan well and take advice and have the experience of a life time!

i have a lot of half-baked plans, probably won't get a placement and the spain thing would only be a couple of months, and i've got a whole yr to fill!
even if ur doing it alone, then if u want company for a bit let me know and i'll see if i can meet up
you won't be lonely, in fact, you'll meet MORE people this way because you'll be more inclined to talk to people and isn't that what travelling is about? Meeting people and seeing things you have never seen? If you go with people you know, you only get half the show.
I agree, and then you could make a plan to hook up with the people on DPC that live in Europe. I saw that you already got such an offer from south Iceland, come to the north part and I show you around here;-)
A friend of my daughter's took off for some worldwide exploring. He went by himself and documented his experience along the way on his BLOG. It's really fun reading....check it out....go to the bottom and hit some of the different journey links. This will give you a lot of inspiration to do this...

I have a good friend from back home who did something like this though. She and her boyfriend backpacked and climbed their way all over France for 2 years. Sold everything they owned before going over, stayed in hostiles. She loved every minute of it and ended up going back 2 years after that.
Good luck in whatever you do. I spent my single days mt biking all over WA and ID lol. Backpacking through Europe somehow sounds much more exciting!

check out the site //www.couchsurfing.com its a network of people who open their homes to travelers. doesn't get better than that. I'll pm you to make sure you get it. Also keep in mind I'll probably be in Sweden sept-06 till at least jan 07.
