whew...I'm getting dizzy with all the switching back and forth! But you are so obliging, bvy, very gallant of you to switch over so I don't feel so outnumbered! :)
Karma - and anyone else interested - here's a VERY cheap option for a pinhole:
1. Find a body cap for your camera.
2. Determine the approximate center of the body cap.
3. With a drill, and about a 3/8 - 1/2" bit, drill a hole in the center of your body cap.
4. Find an aluminum soda can. With kitchen shears or similar, cut a circular disk of aluminum that's larger than the hole you drilled in your body cap. (About 3/4 - 1" will work.)
5. Set the disk on a wooden block/table, take a very small needle (quilting sharps work well) and set the needle point in the middle of the aluminum disk; rotate the disk while pressing down gently with the needle until the needle goes through. (Some would advocate "sanding" down the hole on the inside - I didn't do that.)
6. Take black electrical tape and tape the disk onto the body cap, with the pinhole more or less as centered as you can get it.
Next - remove lens from camera, attach body cap with teeny hole in it. Laugh at yourself when you try to look through the viewfinder... :-) Oh, and cringe when you first look at the pictures - you will find you have a TON of sensor dust!
I'll play too, if I may. I've tried the lens cap concept, but used heavy tin foil instead of an aluminum soda can. I'll try the soda can this week, since I wasn't thrilled with the tin foil.
Melethia - isn't the aluminum can rounded? Do I have to pound it flat before I begin, or is the curved shape better?
Most soda cans these days are very thin aluminum. They are round but when you cut out the disk, it's not very curved. Once you tape it down on the body cap, it'll lay pretty flat. The nice thing about pinholes is they're not an exact science. :-)
another question. for the drilled holes -- is smaller better, or does it matter? I only ask because my husband (nards656) is a mech. eng. at a machine shop and has the ability it as small as i would like. likewise with the metal disc. is th

Yay! as far as the size of the hole, that depends on the distance to your sensor, I think - you should be able to find size suggestions on some of those "make your own" links we mentioned before, and I'll see if I can't scare up something particular for your 30D.
there should be a little line with a circle through it somewhere on the top of your camera body, which indicates where the sensor is - the distance between that and the body cap is what you can enter into the "depth of camera" field, I believe, and the calculator will do the rest

I always wondered what that was and never bothered to check..huh.
It's nothing profound, and I knew what I was getting into entering a pinhole shot in a "serious" challenge. But in the spirit of the upcoming side challenge, I thought, what the hell...
And it finished #5 overall of all pinhole entries (!). That doesn't say much, but still...

Dont plan on submitting an image daily this month but hope to upload a dozen or so images. And, of course, I guess we will all be saving our best image for the April Free Study?

Well I think that is blatant datism and I intend to make a complaint to the UN Commission on Human Rights. You are denying us access to the calendar on the basis of our longitude. Just another disgraceful example of Americocentric arrogance. And you can't play cricket or proper football, either, so there. You'll be hearing from whichever African despot is currently the UN's Chair of Human Rights.
