I could never browse that site with dail-up the files were too large but I now finally have broadband connection after years of dail-up.
The images are fantastic!! some really outstanding photographers with stunning artistic styles.
Anyway I have given it a go with a few travel shots and have scored one published out of three. I can understand why the two were rejected and in future will only submit images that I’m proud of.
interesting that most people seem to use their real name on 1x instead of the username they have here . . I wonder if it is perceived as a more grown up site ?

How many of you guys vote in the Screening process?
I've probably voted on 20-30 images but honestly I don't feel qualified to do so and find when I'm in that section I pass no opinion on many images. I do know what I like and what works for me but don't think my opinion should matter.
"Don't Publish" seems a little harsh. Who's to say, let alone me, what's worthy or not of being seen? Again, I can tell you whether or not I like something but to decide if something shouldn't be published or viewed by others based on my personal likes, is a little strange.
Any thoughts?

Your vote in particular carries almost no weight at all, everyone's vote is only an opinion insofar as the Crew make all publish/reject decisions. Should consider participating in the site, this and other concepts have been discussed there often. In their own forums. Not these forums. Those.

There's also a crowd that participates in this thread that offers photographic work and opinion on both sites and there is a bond that relates to how e think and shoot.

eta: Another point is that I am discussing this here with people I've known for over 4 years time (some at any rate) and have seen the exact same images that I have posted there and would prefer speaking with people that I know my work and how I think, to a degree. Also DPC and the strength of it's community can certainly withstand photographically related ideas tat are diverse, even those from another site.

Yes, all very fine, but the question is do you think about one site and then share those thoughts everywhere but that site. You're either adding to the fun or you're standing in the corner gossiping about everyone else at the party.

Fair enough, if you're saying that 1x would benefit from my thoughts and that I should share them there, as well? You may be right if you're suggesting balance but as far as gossip, my post was very much about me and how I view myself and my opinion.
In time, I may post some thoughts over there. I'm still feeling the place out and would gladly speak when I have an idea what that community is about. As of now, I don't and won't throw around my many opinions until I have something to stand on. At the moment, I've only invested a month there and when the community knows my work, then we can engage on a meaningful level.
Steve, you are perfectly qualified to vote. Voting to publish or not publish isn't that much different than assigning a numeric value to images in challenges. In both cases, you're voting your heart, your thinking - do you like the image, does it work for you. That's what's important, in voting. At both places, voting is anonymous, even if the images themselves aren't necessarily anonymous. And at both places you vote your heart. You don't vote for your friends, or only for those styles that you favour (like colour in my case), but you vote on each picture, whether or not YOU think it is worth it to have it on the front page (at either place).
In the end, here at DPC the final result is a cumulative of all the many people voting, so it is in essence a popularity contest, except that there's enough voters that for the most part the results are quite fair (within the style/tastes of the community). At 1X, it is a composite of popularity and crew choice. The number of popular votes per image is less there than here, but it is less of a popularity contest because of the crew side - crew always makes a final decision. Both places have their tastes/style, and the choices reflect that. Both systems are pretty good I think, mainly because both of them do not rely much on you lobbying your friends to vote up your image, which is what seemingly happens at a lot of other places. I don't know. The only other place I've participated in lately is DPReview, and I have no idea how their system works.

I think I'm valuing even my own opinion less and less these days. I prefer discussion and not simply throwing an opinion out in one direction. I know, I myself miss a lot and see many other people "not getting it" across the board, throughout the internet. I suppose some images are clearly not earth shakers but I have less energy for them, these days?
Also, I don't vote much here on DPC either, so my feelings do cut in each direction, equally.
Over the last few weeks, with a number brilliant exceptions, things are starting to look a little more safe...perhaps obvious, over there. "The look" is becoming a little more clear but still underneath all the common stuff, the images are still very good.
Has the site seen or felt a change since you (Ursula) took a leave of absence? I assume if posthumous or Ubique were (Head) Screeners at 1x the front page would look quite different...no?
