Is it true?... the people who chose to interpret this challenge as a color challenge (non gray????) are all voting in a block, with monolithic "1"s, against the images with gray subjects. There was no prohibition against conversion to a black and white image. The only conditional clasue sentence was .... "You should do your best to avoid extreme shades of gray (read: shades of black and white)". That doesn't mean take a color picture with some obscure element in gray. Nearly every photo has that condition. Furthermore, there are many images which are naturally in shades of gray. The challenge here was to capture a gray colored subject and avoid the extreme ends of the histogram. Mostly, I'm concerned that a group would vote in a block based on their "unique" interpretation.

I'm not sure how else is one supposed to vote if its not based on anything other than their own interpretation of the challenge. I see no evidence that people are voting 'en block' only that a proportion of people (myself included) have interpreted the challenge as meaning shooting in colour to represent the colour grey.
Personally I found this very very tough to come up with an original idea to meet the challenge. I am pleased with the results I achieved but I fear that the voters are not (4.6 so far). It would have been SO much easier to take a photo of any 'ole thing and then convert it to B&W (with shades of grey!) but I considered that a cop out and I have voted down any images that have done this.
Its just a personal opinion but seeing my score go up and down like a yoyo one I feel strongly about just now :)
I don't know what the confusion is really. It seems pretty obvious to me whether a photographer is trying to do something with the challenge (i.e-be challenged and come up with something that fits) whether that photo is in colour or black and white. It shouldn't make any difference. The colour, Grey, needs to be a large part of the shot either physically or metaphorically i'd say. Taking a photograph of a sunny beach and converting it to greyscale isn't going to cut it say, and neither is taking a photograph of something that just happens to have a grey background, or be next to someone wearing a grey hat. Looking through them there does seen to be quite a few shoehorns and i'm a bit amazed at the lack of some peoples imaginations to be honest. There lots of fantastic shots there as well of course!

That was maybe a bit harsh of me so i apologise for that. Admittedly, a colour Grey challenge is a lot harder than most other colours to focus on and be creative with.

Umm, this isn't the gray challenge it's the grey challenge. Probably want to go back and vote with that knowledge in your free hand.
There is no "grey" in my dictionary. I do understand gray. And, it isn't the colors of the rainbow.

So we share the same opinion. Just that I also take into account, whether an image meets the challenge or not. A shot of an (obviously) coloured subject that was converted to b/w or has been desaturated doesn't (IMO).

On previous color challenges with advanced editing, or this one, did it say anywhere that selective desaturation was prohibited? The Color Purple, for example:

I have to agree.
Provided that the main grey subject wasn't created by desaturation then I would certainly not be in any way prejudiced against it.

I wouldn’t make any assumptions based on a challenge from 5 years ago the crowd is so fickle here they change with every challenge. I can never pick what the voters are thinking.
