After tearing tendons a couple weeks ago in my right shoulder I decided to throw caution to the wind and got a snowblower, and OMG is it niiiiiice best investment Ive ever made :)
I just heard on the news tonight about several people reaching in their snowblowers to remove an obstruction and losing some fingers. Don't be an idiot like those folks - get a neighbor to remove the obstruction. :D
Obstruction? oo you mean when there is something in there that slows the blade down? you just give it more gas & problem usually goes away... over there and some over here and off to the left a little, no problem :)
There's this new invention called "snow chains" that you should try. They work great. :D
They don't work so hot on a bed-empty, 2WD small pickup though... Weight over axle is the main thing to add.

Chains have always worked fine for me, with older Toyota pickups (about as light as you can get), newer Tacoma pickups, my Tundra, my wife's 4-Runner, and every other vehicle I've used them on for the past 35 years or so. Around here almost everyone has a pickup (or two) and most of the people that use chains do so without any problems. As for being bed-empty, how often do you see a pickup in a snowstorm without snow in the bed? Snow is heavy. My Tundra currently has about 1000 lbs. of snow in the bed. No extra weight needed. It must be an east coast problem.
Back when I lived in the Upper Peninsula of MI, we averaged 250 inches of the white stuff a year. I drove a Ford F150 2 wheel drive the entire time. I'd add about 200 lbs over the rear axle was all. I only got stuck once. Studded tires are not allowed there. Chains are only allowed when not on the highways.
Now I live in Alaska where we don't get nearly as much snow....it's too cold most of the winter to actually snow that much. But, we're allowed studded tires and/or chains. I drive a 1998 Dodge Caravan ( still 2 wheel drive, but at least FWD), and yes I have the studs on all winter long. The roads can get pretty slick and iced up so the studs give me added traction.
I love snow and wish we got more up here....except for the damn snow plow guy who fills my driveway every time he goes by. grrrrrr

nearing a foot of snow here, this storm is just about done with us but they are predicting a few more inches for tomorrow evening. getting ready to move a few tons of the crap out of our driveway. Would be a great day to own a bob cat, could make alot of cash.

thats how it was around 2 AM here. It was coming down so thick we couldnt see the street light a half block away.

Do you Seattle residents remember that blizzard in November 06? My brother and I were up for our cousin's funeral. We had to fly out the day the blizzard hit. We got stuck on I-5 for close to 6 hours, missed our flight, and ended up staying another day. Not a fun trip to start with and ended on that note. Since we both learned how to drive in blizzards, we didn't think it was that bad.

I really was surprised that we got as much snow as we did and didn't prepare. The weatherpeople up here are always raving on about STORM 08 or 07 or whatever and the snow doesn't even stick to the road. With Christmas I just didn't want to go pay a couple hundred bucks on chains that I wouldn't need.
It finally stopped snowing here, however it is still blowing all over the place. Here are a few shots that I took from out in front of my house this morning. I intend on going out a bit later to grab some shots by the River and around a few tree filled parks after the snow plows find there way past here,. until then our entire neighborhood is pretty much blocked in. 12 inches of snow with drifts as high as 2 feet tall in the street right now.

I'm in Saginaw and we're getting pounded pretty good too. I just got back from lunch and the roads are a mess. Of course, our subdivision won't see a plow for at least a week so we'll see if I even make it home tonight.
its actually not too bad here in Montana. of course this is generally the amount of snow we have, so we get to bitch and moan for a few days but we get over it real quick. i do feel sorry for the out-of-state dumbasses who didnt think it was necessary to get snow tires
