The D90 goes to 1/200 (i think some go to 1/250) with the onboard iTTL flash, but with the speedlights SB-600/800/900 you can apparently use FP mode and use any shutter speed, I'm not sure what the advantages and disadvantages are with this method though. Of course the high speed sync is handy for fill/balanced flash in bright situations, but I find even at 1/60 the flash is enough to stop motion, see:
This was shot at 1/60 iTTL with the D90s onboard flash, I had two mirrors reflecting the flash from the side at the back (10 and 2 o'clock) to try and smooth the lighting out a little and make up for the fact I didn't have an off camera flash. Of course the high speed sync is handy for fill flash in bright situations.
