I tried that but the MIRAR toolbar wasn't there....could that be because I disabled it? The google toolbar was there though.
Were there a number of blank ones there? Cos, Antivirus 2009, the trojan horse, just puts a number of blank entries in startup. If so, these need unchecking to get rid of the unwanted toolbar, whatever!
There was one and I unchecked it. After rebooting I went briefly to IE and the toolbar is still there. I'm on firefox now and am having no problems so far. This thing is a real pain!
Both McAfee and Norton have evolved into viruses that sap your machine's resources. Re-upping with them was like having to give your lunch money to the playground bully for "protection."
I made the switch to AVG several years ago and I've never had an inappropriate event. I first used the free version for a few years. Then I finally bought the internet security version last year and I've been really pleased. Schedule daily full system scans and updates for when you usually sleep (or when your system is on and not being used) and you can pretty much forget about it.
Also, I never use Internet Explorer or Outlook. I only use Mozilla's Firefox and Thunderbird.
A few years ago I was hit by a virus (a SQL Server worm to be precise) even though I had anti-virus software. The worm hit me in the morning, and the anti-virus database was updated in the afternoon. Too late.
So my anti-virus strategy now is;
1) Assume I'll be hit by a virus or a hardware failure at some stage
2) Don't run any anti-virus s/w - It just causes software conflicts, system slowdown, and resource issues
3) Be really careful about what .exe files I run, or which websites I visit
4) Backup all my important files regularly
5) Have all the OS and application installation CDs and serial numbers handy, so I can re-format and re-install everything within a day. (Even better, use software like Driveimage which creates an image of the OS with all the apps installed and configured so it only takes 20 minutes to re-build)
I'm looking to spend $65 on software, not $2000 on a new system (never mind needing all new software)! :-) On top of which, I think Apples are grossly over-rated and over-priced, and these days don't perform differently enough from PCs to make a difference.
No reason to get snotty, it was only a suggestion, and a very viable one at that.
