Since head-to-heads are all the rage at the moment, I thought about organising a head-head knockout tourney and thought I'd see who was interested..
Format as follows:
1. Participants are drawn into head-to-head pairs who will compete against each other.
2. I'm proposing to start round 1 on Jan 1 2009. All challenges that are announced on or after this date (including speed challenges, extra challenges and free studies) count for the purposes of this tourney.
3. In each pair, for each challenge they both participate in, whoever's picture scores the highest wins a point. The first person to 2 points wins the match.
4. If one calendar month after the match begins, neither player has scored 2 points, then the tie will be decided as follows:
Round 1 i) If any challenges at that point are still in voting or in submission, then these challenges will run their course.
ii) If that does not settle it, the average of the challenge score for each players from the start of the round will be taken (provided they have entered at least two challenges) and the highest average wins. NB in the event that a member is playing a registered user, the average will be taken of the challenges both have had the opportunity to enter.
iii) If that does not settle it or either photographer enters only one or fewer challenges during the round, then the all time average will be taken into account instead of the average from the start of the round. NB if one photographer who's entered two or more (photographer A) is against one who's entered one or fewer (photographer B) then A's average from the start of the round will be compared against B's all-time average.
Rounds 2 onward i) If any challenges at that point are still in voting or in submission, then these challenges will run their course.

NB in the event that a member is playing a registered user, the average will be taken of the challenges both have had the opportunity to enter.

5. A player may only qualify for the next round via their all-time average (i.e. having entered 2 or fewer challenges during the month their match runs for) once. If in a subsequent round they enter 2 or fewer challenges they lose by default.
6. Round 1 consists of 20 pairs in the head-to-head format. The 20 winners go through to round 2, plus the 4 highest-ranked of the 20 people who lost in round 1 (based on the average score of the pics they submitted between the first challenge announced after Jan 1 and the point which they lose their round 1 match. NB They must have entered two challenges during the course of the round to be considered for a highest loser spot. Anyone who has entered one or fewer will be eliminated)
7. That makes 24 people in round 2, in 12 pairs in a head-to-head format, the 12 winners go through to round 3 plus the 4 highest ranked losers from round 2 (based on the average score of the pics they submitted between the first challenge announced after Jan 1 and the point which they lose their round 2 match. NB They must have entered two challenges during the course of the round to be considered for a highest loser spot. Anyone who has entered one or fewer will be eliminated)
8. That makes 16 people in round 3 and from there it's a straight knockout. Round 4 will consist of the winners of the 8 matches in round 3, round 5 will consists of the 4 winners in round 4 and so on.
9. For the purposes of the tourney, the open challenges each week count as one challenge. Giving the example of the two open challenges open for submissions as I write this (Bokeh and Personification), if one of the pair is in Bokeh and the other Personification, then whoever scores highest in their respective challenge wins the point.

After the DPCO I realized I’m not much for the basic editing challenges. That would leave me with 4 member challenges + free study per month. If that’s enough sign me up.

It's only the challenges they're both in that count in the head-to-head so, if in a pair one is a member and the other is a registered user, then the members challenges won't count in the head to head as the registered user can't enter those. It's really only the open challenges that can count in matchups like that.
Admittedly, the tie-break rule I made says that, in the event of no-one getting to 2 points, the average of the challenges over the month counts. Admittedly, members will have the opportunity to have their average over a greater number of challenges than registered users.
I could modify that in that scenario to say that, in the event where a member is playing a registered user, the tie break will only be in the challenges they both had opportunity to enter. What about that?

i would suggest if you run it from the 7th of each month, that would tie in with getting the free study scores at the right time, and give the extra week after the holidays as well!

I see no issue with it being based on the average of all challenges you enter in the month. Every time you enter a challenge you have just as good a chance of doing under your average as over it, so I see little issue here. Based on averages there is no advantage to entering more. (if you said your highest score for the month it would be a problem, but that is not the case)
