The description in the new thread makes sense to me & I'd love to see it start right away.
I wonder, as a matter of etiquette, if PMs should be shot out to the owners of photos being considered for discussion just to make sure they don't mind the attention. The only reason I mention this is that the original idea seems to have been expanded to include photos at various levels and some folks at the middle or lower end of the challenge might not appreciate their shot being the subject of an autopsy. Of course, most DPCers would love such attention I suspect, but I'm not sure everyone would.
I would suggest maybe one more image from each challenge. I have found that every challenge their is a voter favorite that although it doesn't win, will gather the most favs or comments in the challenge, even more than the winner before it sits on the front page and gathers exposure and more comments. I think finding this image, that really connects strongly with a part of the voter base is worth study. Its not too hard to find if you voted in the challenge, or look through the results to see who had the most favs or comments after the challenge. Just a thought.
Good point. Looking at just the winners is not going to teach you that much. You have to look at much more.
It's important to understand that given the nature of the voting process (ex. the ADD tendencies to voting) and the high degree of emphasis placed on meeting the challenge theme, what you get often are winners that are cut from the same cloth. That is simple, clean, uncluttered imagery that can easily be processed and quickly communicate the challenge theme to voters of all temperament. The complex photo on the other hand, which could be just as good if not better and have more lasting appeal is always at a disadvantage because it cannot communicate the challenge theme quickly enough as something that has been built around just that and stripped of everything else. We basically reward the photos that have the least to say and that is not the receipe for great photography but it is for stock photography.
I think this discussion would be more enlightening if specific challenges as a whole were discussed and not just the winners but I'd be interested in whatever you guys do.
