you right click a picture the op posted and go to copy shortcut, then when ready to post click the tiny icon above that says insert thumbnail (second from right). right click and paste, then delete all of it EXCEPT the numbers at the end. It should look something like this when you hit ok...[ thumb]174572[/thumb]

If the picture is not too big (under 400 pixels), you can link to it by using the [img][/img] tags, sticking the URL to your image (hosted on some other site) between the tags.
If you want to post a clickable thumbnail to a larger image, you must make/upload both the full-sized and thumbnail images first, then create a link using the hyperlink tags to link to the large image, and using the image tags within the descriptor area to display the thumbnail, like this (use square rather than curly brackets):
