I'm getting the full range of votes here, from several 4s 3s and 2s and a few 8s 9s and I think a 10 as well, I guess it's an image you either love / hate or get / don't get.
But overall the scores plummeted to this:

I would not be THAT literal, however I did notice at least one entry where there is no number visible and is only implied by the title.
I think I saw that one too but took me a minute to find the number referred to in the title. Though we might be looking at two different shots.
Yes! there are 1 or 2 you really have to look at... I guess the 2 second voters will DNMC those?
There are a couple where the numbers aren't immediately visible, one shot though I could not see a number no matter how hard I looked. It was a really groovy shot though.
I didn't think mine was either but, I guess being off for months makes me forget that it's possible! ;)

You know, I think it was the subject itself. It's a rather lack luster type of subject to have to photograph in some interesting way. I think that voters aren't all that interested in photos of numbers! Heaven knows, I work with them all day and I HATE 'em....unless they are numbers going INTO my bank account that is. :))
I truly thought mine had all the "stuff" for a high 6, low 7 shot. It really makes me wonder if some people have a way of knowing it's my image and score me down. :)

I have to be honest and say I thought that about mine too - well low to mid 6s was where I thought it would be and was not surprised when I saw a low 6 after 16 votes (been caned since then), I feel my photography is improving at a phenomenol rate and each shot I have entered in the last 4 challenges has been technically better than previous ones. I'm working on my PP and try to: ensure sharpness, avoid DNMC pics, give some element of originality, infact I have a check sheet that I mark off for each entry ;) Am truly gutted by this score now though:

lololol, yeah yeah, it was mine!! I need to supply a macro lens to be able to see them, but as you stated in your comment, it is a good photo lolol

I think that it's not so much a matter of technicals in this particular challenge as much as it is the manner in which one has captured voters' interest. It's a rather dull subject and personally, I can't really see many of us in there who have managed to give some "outstanding" type of photographic interpretation to it. (Notice that I'm including myself in this category as well. :))
Personally, unless there are some 7 scorers who are superstitiously hiding with baited breath, hoping to stay in that range, I think the ribbons will be to scores in the low to mid 6 range in this particular challenge so, your 5.44 is not really all that bad!
As to what anyone is doing "wrong" in these challenges....well, I think it's a matter of personal tastes really. One can be as technically perfect as one wants but, the winners boil down to either interest factor or great editing programs and skills or both, grabbing voters' tastes at that moment. Even technically perfect shots will have voters tearing down scores if it simply doesn't grab their fancy. Sometimes, voters go for stock shot looks, other times, they go for the unusual/different. It's all a "Crap Shoot" (Pun intended *grin*)
