A small propane stove can sometimes save the day when the power is off too. Rope or wire for a clothes line, and clothes pins are good things to have. It's sort of late for shopping, but you may want to get extra propane fuel if you have a camp stove and or a lantern that uses it.
A small 12 volt DC to 120 volt AC inverter (Black&Decker, Walmart and other stores about $20) will allow you to charge your camera batteries and computer from your car when power is out. Any of the larger ones will run the new CFL bulbs in a table lamp if you run an extension cord to the car, but be careful about running the battery down with it. The 400 watt and up sizes will run a television as well.
We just missed this one here in S Florida. They had it pointed at us before it hit Haiti and the Dominican Republic. My heart goes out to all of you Texans.

Being from South Florida I know that you may end up with no electricity and or internet access for days after the storm has passed. looking like a direct hit on Galveston and Houston. The storm is due to make landfall late tonight early Saturday.
Many of the streets in Galveston are already under water due to the rising tide.
Our neighborhood has really pulled together and everyone is helping each other prepare their homes. It is a beautiful morning here right now - hard to believe the day is about to change so dramatically.
My cousin, who's stationed in Galveston with the coast guard, flew into Philadelphia last night. I'm shocked they let him go, but his leave has been scheduled for months. Good luck to everyone there!
Ike is directly south of me now. The West side of Galveston is already under water it looks like. Looks like he will not get as strong as they predicted, so stay high and dry everyone. We are expecting pretty good surge here...similar to Rita.

yah yah yah, however I think Galveston is going to have it worse. Dallas will be getting some nastiness too. This thing is huge,eeveryone in Texas and LA needs to brace themselves.
The storm surge is exceeding what they originally expected. Do you have your water wings, Jaime?? Mr. tough guy....lol. Just be careful!!! Parts of LA are already without power (again).
