I liked the little burned bits, and the butter and salt was good - maybe a little too much salt - but there were too many unexploded grains in there and I was a little concerned for my teeth.

Which would be better;
200 comments of "nice", "don't like it", "oof", "good find", or 10 comments that actually tell you specifically what the voter likes or doesn't and suggestions for improvement?
(btw, you've cast over 600 votes and left less than 30 comments... :) )

On the topic, if you want more real and beneficial comments the best thing to do is to start a thread asking for a critique of the image after the challenge is over. You will get plenty of comments that will help you. Trying to make comments mandatory wont happen. My stance is I pay to play and I give comments only when I feel compelled to do so. If DPC made commenting mandatory I would no longer participate in challenges. This is for fun it is not a duty or a job.

To force people to comment when they vote would guarantee that very few would vote. Considering we have challenges with 200 to 500 entries, the typical entry only gets about 200 votes anyway. Cut that in less than half, and a single vote would have a pretty substantial impact.
Encouraging commenting is one thing, forcing it makes no sense
But that would also guarantee only serious guys vote, no? Are you saying you are ok with 1000 trollers who make voting a roller caster ride, as opposed to 100 serius voters?
An inspired comment is always much better than a forced one.

No, it would just say that the image didn't inspire a comment.
Best way to solve the problem is to not be part of it. Simply make an effort to set the example and leave useful comments on the shots you vote on. Making yourself figure out why you do or don't like an entry is also one of the learning experiences that can improve your own photography.

Comments should never be mandatory imho. Your best comments are from people that are compelled to do so because the photograph said something to them (not literally, so don't you all go there) whether good or bad. As much as we would all like, you'll never be able to force someone to comment.
That concept (negative reaction to comments) is so overblown IMO.
It may happen infrequently, but when it happens it has an impact. Perhaps that's why it's seen as a problem. I got three PM's from people last week after leaving comments on their entries. Two thanked me, which was nice, but by writing they also identified which entries were theirs. The third person said he appreciated the feedback but that he didn't appreciate being accused of breaking the rules (not what I said, but oh well). Maybe I should switch preferences so my identity remains hidden during voting.
For the record, I would hate to read through 50 comments let alone 100 if it were mandatory on any image of mine.... Imagine how many would say the exact same thing, over & over & over.. You'll come to find that even when you create an image that sparks a lot of comments, many of them are the same..
I feel that comments are simply that..Comments.. Odds are, you're never going to receive a comment that makes you say, a-ha !!!, now I see what I did wrong.. :-).. I appreciate the ones I get even if they aren't helpfull or if they are hurtfull..It means someone took the time to share a thought they were having about something I created and I leave it at that..
Having been a part of the first challenge, I feel there is a need for more people to comment and not just troll (I realized the same myself, because the comments arent mandatory, I would just keep rating the pictures and move on).
So heres the big question: Why cant we make comments mandatory?
First I thought we do that only if someone rates a picture <=4.. but then everybody would tend to give at least a 5 to avoid writing one.
There are a few downsides I still see here:
[1] People might just garble instead of commenting -> but perhaps one can find out who did that after voting ends.
[2] People might 'copy/paste' same comment to all pics -> again, one risks their credibility if it becomes known who is doing that.
As much as i would love it for everyone to comment on my picture, i would hate to be forced to do so.
But, i gotta say, i hate seeing a 1, and no explanation. Especially when there is not a single 2 or 3.
