You have a point, up to a point. But I'd also say that pixel-peeping and obsessing over the tiniest technical differences in image quality aren't the way to go, either.
What might be good, though, is to contact photogs who took shots you might like to see bigger, and ask whether they'd be willing to send you the full-size versions. I can tell you that the two top-scoring shots on Nikon look just as good full-size, which is why they were approved for sale on DPC Prints.
