If anyone is torn between these two monitors, the following photos may help you make a decision. The E248WFP is Dell's 'entry' widescreen panel (view here). The E2408WFP is the upgraded 'ultra sharp' widescreen panel (view here) Both are 24" and have a maximum resolution of 1920x1200.
I initially bought the E248 as I thought 'it can't be that bad'. And generally, its not, but I wasn't satisfied with it for photography work. I upgraded to the E2408 but for the moment have both until I get a shipping label from Dell to return the E248 so I thought I'd take some comparisson shots of the monitors' performance.
For these shots, the exposure was locked at ISO400, f/7.1, 1/60. The camera is a D200 with a 17-55 f/2.8 lens focused on the E248 for each shot (my intent isn't to compare sharpness but color shift). White balance was set to 5000K for each shot. The monitors are tilted slightly towards each other - this position was unchanged throughout. Contrast on both was set to 50, brightness on both was set to 75; the E248 was set to "Multimedia" preset, the E2408 to "Desktop" preset (these produced a similar image for the front view and are the settings I used on the E248 and will likely use on the E2408). Color saturation was left at the preset defaults. Resolution was set to the maximum 1920x1200. Video card is a 512MB ATI HD3870 - both monitors connected via DVI. The E248 is on the left and the E2408 is on the right. The 'spot' on the E2408 is the mouse cursor. This isn't too scientific a test but I think the results speak for themselves (i.e. I'll be keeping the E2408):
