Actually this behavour is common in humans as well. Some prisons require inmates to bend over and cough strongly to dislodge anything they may have, tried to stash. I guess it beats, other methods.

Platypuses have very soft fur. I avoid touching dogs as much as I can; I've only touched a platypus once when I was very young.
Platypuses and echidnas, like reptiles and birds, also have only one outlet for eggs and and everything else (obviously, eggs from the female..) ;-) Chloaca.
