As other's have said, he made great movies, but his politics overshadowed those achievements. So, yes.
I'd been pleasantly surprised this AM with the lack of anti-gun nuts proudly crowing about Heston's death. Up until now. I'm sure after the weekend many of the other rights haters will pipe up. "Haters" is a young modern term I've never used before. It seemed very appropriate for this situation.

on the other side. So I miss few opportunities to throw it back

Back on topic, I'll always remember Charlton Heston as a great actor in some of my favorite films, Ben Hur, Planet of the Apes, Midway, The 10 Commandments, and others.
There are some threads on DPC where I am really AMAZED at some DPCers. And there are some threads where I am really amazed at some DPCers. This is one of the latter.
I count as some of my all-time favourite movies "The Greatest Show on Earth", "The Ten Commandments", "Ben Hur", and, for certain, the original "Planet of the Apes". Every Easter I make sure I watch at least three of the four and half hours of The Ten Commandments for example, and have done so since I was about seven. I can't get enough of biblical epics and Heston. But I'd probably restrain myself if asked to call him a "great actor". :-)
It is sad that he passed away, for his family and friends. I don't think its right to wish someone dead because of their beliefs. He also was a sick man. After the Columbine shootings he went to Colorado and held a pro gun rally. He also did this in Michigan after the death of a little girl. People that love and cherish him really need to get a clue.
Since my "thank goodness" comment has caused so much upset I will explain.
I don't consider myself pro-NRA or pro-gun control. I have family in Law Enforcement and that hunt. I was raised that you never point a gun (even a toy gun) at a person unless you mean it.
All that said I think that Mr. Heston becoming the president of the NRA was one of the worst thing for the NRA and for gun control. His rhetoric, "You can have my gun when you pry it from my cold, dead hands," and his lack of putting forward other options that might prevent kids from dying, is reprehensible. You know the kids who get out Dad's gun and play cops and robbers and accidentally kill a playmate? Or the kids that take a gun to school?
So, yes, I am thankful that I don't have to listen to his rhetoric. He was a great actor, but IN MY OPINION he did the country a great disservice. Dying is a fact of life. I'm neither happy nor saddened by his passing.

I was surprised to learn that he only embraced certain conservative policies in his later years; as a younger men he supported Martin Luther King, Jr. among others.

another great Heston movie to catch is, "Touch of Evil". lol...and one of my all-time faves, "Naked Jungle"...it's about rampaging killer jungle ants! how can it possibly be a bad movie?!?! :D
