Well, I was hoping to help out with another state close by, but I guess Oklahoma is the only state I can do right now.
I travel a lot for business so if I travel somewhere before your deadline I'll shoot some things while I'm there. I never know when or where though, so I can't promise anything.
Sounds good, I just opened this thread 2 days ago, so maybe more people will join in the next week or so!! Just let me know what states you have photographed when you do it so that I don't have to worry as much about that particular one ;)
1x2?...so...that would be like having an image that is 4x8, or 5x10, etc.? That doesn't seem like a very stardard ratio. Maybe 4x6 or 5x7 would be a little more uniform?
OK, now I remember why, we were going with aspect ratios that are used with DP prints, 30x40 was the one I suggested, and it kinda evolved to 1x2. Check out this page to see DPC's aspect ratios.
If you need help with putting the collage together let me know I would love to help also I think it would be cool for us to have different versions of the collage. I also have used a place that I like that prints 30x40 posters (that size may work out for us).

Great!! The more the merrier!! I would honestly love to see LOTS of layouts, its always neat to see different peoples take on things! When we get closer to the end then we can talk printers! ;)
Layout of flag union proportioned for 30x40 print. Title and overall credits can go in the white area at the bottom.
The Blue color is PANTONE 282; if you want to add accents or type in red use PANTONE 193.

My first idea was to make the stars larger and fainter, with the photo set on top, but looking at how tight the layout is, I think probably it would work better with just the photos in the star locations -- you want the photos to be as large as will fit (need room for state name and photo credit), and not much of the star would show outside the photo anyways.

alright, I guess it will have to be something we will need to mess with once we have some photos to place. In the time being, do you think people should crop in a 30x40 aspect ratio?
No -- go to the whole schematic diagram (see earlier link) and measure the rectangles -- then leave room for border and caption.
I'm not sure I understand what you mean. Wouldn't we want the photo's to be cropped in the same ratio as the poster and then sized as needed? I may be completely wrong, I can't wait til I get my copy of illustrator so I can fiddle around! ;)
