Congrats Melissa and GREAT choice. I couldn't be happier with mine. I use different sizes for different things but when shooting for DPC and when I want the best quality images I always use the highest setting for size.
I usually shoot at 2048x1536 just because I know I can get a LOT more pictures on my 128mb memory stick that way. When it's something I feel might be printable, or something I know I'm going to be cropping down, I shoot at full resolution, 2560x1920. The 128mb stick seems to hold about 55-ish pictures at full resolution, 80-ish at 2048. your mileage may vary

I don't have the disk space to fool around with. My main computer is a notebook with a 10 gig drive, and it's just about full. I don't have a CD burner, and iI'm running out of Zip disks. I also only have the one 128mb memory stick (I use the 32mb that came with the camera in my Clie instead). So yes, I'm on board with "always shoot at full resolution," but I just can't afford to do it.
98% of the time I use 1280 X 960 on my Sony 707, which is more than adequate for my use. Sometimes I do bump it up to full resolution, but not very often
I am going to try to use the camera at full res. but we will see if I need to take more photos, I will have to lower the res. in order to get more photos.. I take alot of photos away from the house like at the cabin where I have no computer....
Welcome to the team, guys! (I play for two teams ;)). As a 10D owner I've come to realise that there are very distinct advantages to a small and extremely versatile camera. I love my 10D and you'd have to pry it from my cold, dead hands, but the cost, weight, convenience, versatility and integrity (no frickin dust-on-the-sensor problems) of the F717 and cameras like it are amazing. You may think it's large, but only until you've held a 10D with the battery grip and a 70-200 zoom lens on it.
You don't have an inferior tool to the DSLR crowd - just a different one. After an unsuccessful attempt to sell mine recently, I have decided to keep it for just this reason. I don't have a general purpose zoom lens for my 10D 'cause the F717 fulfills the everyday camera role for now. I have come to appreciate its abilities as a hand-holdable landscape (read: large depth-of-focus at large apertures) camera.
As for the thread topic...I find that shooting at full resolution will reduce noise when resampled as an averaging of pixels takes place. If shooting for the web and the number of images storable is a concern, however, shooting at medium resolution is more than enough for printing good 4x6s and 5x7s and will allow you to, of course, take more photos. A photo taken is better than one not taken when your memory stick is full...
when I had mine I only ever used max.
infact I've never used anything other that max res on a digi cam.
if the photo comes out good, and you want to crop and play with it, the more pixels, the better.
