I agree that shifts of more than a few degrees can be problematic, and also agree that the back-focusing seen here is characteristic of that error. Still, minor recomposition is unlikely to throw things that far out of whack, and if the photog has a history of success with this thecnique at 85mm and f/1.8, 50mm should be no worse.
I've typically got more problem with my body position shifting between focus lock and firing the shutter than I do with focus/recompose under these circumstances, given that the recomposing is minor.

I did a comparison awhile back with this lens and the 50mm F1.4

The 1.8 wide open is sharper then the 1.4 wide open. However, through the test we came up with a lot of out of focus shots with the 1.8. I think the auto focus on it just isn't very good.

Ok, so I'm having a similar problem. I have several f/2.8 L lenses and use a specific focus point on my Canon 30D, but the images are not focused at that location. Even when I do not recompose the shot, the photo is not in focus where I want it. I'm having a problem with focusing on a subject that is several meters away, while the background is in focus which is much further away. I don't get it.

I'm about to start some controlled tests to see exactly which lenses are bothering me and under what exact conditions.

Any insight would be useful. I don't think I am using my camera incorrectly, and the dof at f/2.8 isn't THAT shallow when I'm so far away.

Are you using auto focus? I'm assuming you are since you are talking about focusing and recomposing so I would suggest switching over to manuel focus, since you are in a studio setting you should be able to and not have to worry about missing a shot due to the extra time it takes to focus. I hate to repeat what the others stated as well but 1.8 seems very shallow, especially for a studio set up were you have plenty of light. Unless you are going for some specific look I would open it up a bit and give yourself some room. That shallow DOF at 1.8 is asking for problems on a recompose. Just my thoughts and hope it helps!
