I don't really consider chess to be a sport. I think it's a game. There are some very nice chess shots in the challenge, and clearly everyone doesn't agree with me that chess is not a sport so I'm going to vote on the chess pictures as if chess were a sport. I suppose that in the long run, it doesn't really matter.
Professional, grand master level chess is pretty obviously a gruelling endurance sport that involves a lot of physical stamina and mental discomfort.
But it is also more often played at a much less physical level more in the general meaning of a game - so chess is probably slightly more off topic than say soccer or american football. Still more in the theme than a cat shot though...
If 3 people out of 79 thought it counted, to me that is a significant number implying a culture standard of understanding. Just wish I had thought of it myself.
For those that don't "think" chess is a sport - it doesn't matter what you think. It only matters what the photographer thought. Clearly, some people feel that chess is a sport, and some of them entered chess shots. To them, chess is a sport. It's not totally off-base, so let chess be a sport to those people. Respect their opinion, and vote as if they are on-topic.
By the way, I didn't enter any shots in the Sports challenge, so I have nothing to gain by asserting this.

which is still a lot more physical than a brisk game of chess - which is why I would say chess meets the challenge but isn't so clearly a sport as some others (if you assume the normal definition of a sport as a physical contest)
It just isn't a black/white distinction - some things are more on topic than others, for each voter. To me, chess is close enough to a sport to be on topic, but I would find it unlikely that I'd give my top score for a shot showing 'sports ith lots of action' to a shot of someone moving a pawn.

The challenge details specifically said to "Capture the action of any sport". I fail to see how action is portrayed in some of the submissions, regardless of the definition of sport. Action in this case implies to me "activity", not the lack of it, not posed static shots, etc.
People don't call films "action movies" because there is a lot of slow, plodding, measured imagery. They call them "action movies" because there is a lot of activity! If you saw a movie box labelled "ACTION PACKED!" or "NON-STOP ACTION!" got it home and found a sluggish, tedious, time-consuming, prolonged, protracted, drawn-out chess game I mean movie, I think most people would agree there was nothing "action" about it...

... I approached this challenge as if I were a newspaper or magazine photographer and was given a "Sports" assignment. I made the effort to go places where I would be able to take shots similar to those that you would find in the "Sports" section of a newspaper or in a magazine that covered sporting events, such as Sports Illustrated or ESPN Magazine...

I don't care less if it's labled a sport or a game or even a food product.
As I said, I think people should mark the chess images as if it was a sport. I am unsure too, but that doesn't mean it effected my score. Hell I even scored one image which had an image of a 'sport' I ahve never heard of or seen.
For what it's worth, and probably opening up another can of worms, chess is probably more physical than bloody cricket.
