Melethia....it's not the lowering of my average that would cause me to self-dq this shot. It's the fact that I really adore this shot and I cannot stomach having it at the low score it's getting. It's like putting your best homemade chocolate cake out, being proud of it and having to watch people say..."YUK" and shove the cake back across the table at you.
Don't get me wrong....I'm not one who has consistently seen high scores and this is just a slap in the face to me. I have NEVER reached a 6 in here and this one, I loved and had felt that even if it sat in the 5 range, I'd be happy.......but,.........4.1 ??????
I simply can't stand to see it downgraded so badly for my own personal reasons. After 42 challenge entries....I seem to keep coming back for more beatings when I'm doing so well in other sites. Perhaps, my style of photography is NOT for this site. And, I just don't want to allow this particular shot (out of the dozens, upon dozens of others) take the beating it's taking. :)
I can understand that. Check out my entry for Impressionism. Score sucked, but I love that shot for a number of reasons. I don't mind that score at all, since I realized it was not DPC-friendly. But I've had others that made me feel just the way you do now. I let them ride anyway. Every once in a great while, someone will see in it what you did and that'll make it all worth the pissed-off part about the score. But it's your call - if you do pull it, make sure you post it in your portfolio after the challenge.
Melethia....I see your point! I took a look at your Impressionism shot and your score and you MOST CERTAINLY deserved a better score than that!
I think that I'm finding that there is a certain criteria that gets shoved in here and unless your shot fits within that criteria perfectly, it's going to be a "wash". I noticed in the impressionism and the silhouette challenges yesterday that unless a photo fit that neat and narrow line, it did poorly.
Personally, I didn't enter nor vote in the impressionism challenge. (I normally don't vote in challenges I'm entered into in fear of being subconsciously "biased" and don't want to do that to anyone!) I tried my hand at it and had I known that simply by using certain filters in editing, one could win a ribbon, I'd have entered my shots as I had really spent time in taking them! I guess I figured that DPC being so "traditional photographic" meant that you had to capture the style of Impressionism WITH YOUR CAMERA TECHNIQUE......not as an editing method. It seems that I was wrong and the winning shots were done with editing, not the actual shot. Heck, I could have done well! LOL
You're right to be a little "perturbed" about your shot in that challenge. But, may I say that you've got some phenominal shots in your portfolio! Love them!
I have crept up from a 4.5 which is now a little bit better than my last silhouette III challenge last year. If this keeps going I may make it into the 5s which I will be happy with. It definately doesn't deserve the 4s that is has been getting. I mean I have come a long way since the last silhouette challenge. At least I think so anyway.

Oh, btw....Melethia...I DO have to give credit to pointandshoot for the tremendous effort that went into THAT shot! Now THERE was someone who captured the impressonistic style purely by set-up!

A lot of people in here have downloaded an "excel spreadsheet" to watch individual votes coming in. I cannot remember where it is in here that you download it. Perhaps, someone in here who uses it can help with a link for you????
Personally, I find the "update button" a pain in the rear......so I won't download the spread sheet version. It's just another way to get so ticked off that you want to put your foot through your computer screen! *grin*
Unfortunately I danced too close to the border of being different and Im sure people get it, cant see it, or dont think its a silhoutte. ... I need to stay away from those non-obvious photos.
I'm not sure why this challenge is generating so many low scores posted in this thread. Silhouettes are a time-honored staple of photography and pretty easy to do.
Like the challenge description says:
"Silhouettes are created by backlit subjects, which causes them to appear solid and without much, if any detail."
Very similar to the Backlighting challenge, with less (if any) detail in the shadowed area of the subject.
I've not gone thru all of the entries yet, but I've seen some pretty nice shots in there! Good work people. :)

I checked your profile and you really have some nice photos that should have done better. As long as you like them that is all the really matters. At least that is what I keep reminding myself. I love my photos but have begun to realize they are not for the masses. Yes at times it hurts but I enjoy this hobby so much. I figure one day I will get it and I have learned a lot from this site since I started last year. Hang in there.
Well I can honestly say my shot is getting a higher score than I think it deserved, personally I would have voted mine no higher than a 5 so I am extatic about this score, it´s also been climbing so if it´ll reach a 6 I´ll be completely happy with it´s placement.
This where i expected it to be since it is not an "in your face" kind of shot. Which is good. lol why should I conform? Low voters - bring it on baby, I can take it!
This is my first challenge that I thought my entry might be around the 6 mark... so far its been teetering back and forth to just over and just under 6... hopefully it will stay above and this this will be my first 6+ score in a challenge...
Wow - still going up. And the comments are really good. At this rate it will probably end up at the #2 or #3 spot in my profile. (Pretty sure it won't beat my 6.6, lol)
What a relief! When I checked this morning before work, with 18 votes it was sitting at 4.1 - trolls were definitely out overnight. My shot was definitely silhouette, but the subject won't be understood by most. I expected to be punished most severely. But no comments with a 4.1? I guess that simply means "I don't like it!!" (or maybe with three exclamation points).

Well I'm moving up a little. I'd like to see this one push my image to the right, right off my font page. Not that my neice isn't cute, but it would mean that all of them would be above 5.0 and that would be nice.
I hope to see it go up but as long as it stays above 5 I will be happy. I am pleased to get this good of a score after reading other's replies. Not bad for my first entry IMO.
