definately a tough one to score. i found myself having to resort to being extremely technical about judgement.. balance, composition, lighting, focus, etc. like several folks have said... so many of these pics fall into a sameness area (how many low-key pics of a adjustable crescent wrench were there anyway ??) i got to where i really appreciated a pic that was down right strange.. and there were several.

This was also my first time to enter a picture that was probably either going to be a love it or hate it. I'm guessing that it's going over just like that, cause I have these great comments of praise, but this dismal score. Maybe some of the people who didn't like it could tell me why too?

Honestly I would rather have picture with lots of 1 and lots of 10's than the perfect bell curves that I have been getting...

The score might be irrelevant to me, because that average can be achieved so many ways. HOW I get it is important, because the "inverted" bell-curve photos are the ones which get comments.
After voting on every image in the Tools challenge, I must admit that I found the lot rather boring and uninspiring. There were no real "WOW" images. I am glad it is over.
I'm asking this as someone in a learning curve, I'd like to see what your idea of non-boring, inspiring and wow is. Could you attach a few examples?
Terrific question. Let me try to offer you my take on the answer.
Perhaps there are two answers (at least) to your question. One would relate to the technical aspects and the other might be the ability for the image to communicate a story, idea or feeling.
Technically, you would consider - lighting, focus, depth of field and how it is applied related to the image, colourimetry, contrast ratio, dynamic range, composition, balance, etc.
For the WOW factor, you might simply say, does this image say anything to me? If it made you laugh, think, or react emotionally, then it likely had the WOW aspect for you.
We all see things differently and each of us has our own opinion. All opinions are valid and all folks should be respected for their unique views.
In the past, some of the challenges have really excited me, and then others, have bored me to tears - but that is just me. There were a few exceptional efforts in the Tools challenge and I made sure to express my appreciation for them with comments.
