Perhaps some of you natives will have suggestions on where to go. I'm still sort of a newbie to the West Coast... actually coming up on my one year anniversary August 10th!
I'm not a California native (I'm a South Florida boy), but have been in SoCal for about 14 years and love it.
At any rate, it seems you know Orange Co, so I won't go into details about that area, but (as Shannon says) north San Diego county has some cool, quaint towns such as Encinitas and Solana Beach. Just head down South Coast Highway 101, starting at Carlsbad and you'll see!
.
heh :) i lived on south coast highway for about a year and never once got sick of it. theres always something worth seeing :)
Take trip around San Diego County:
The Zoo, well, as good of a Zoo as it is, it's still just that - a Zoo. The Wild Animal Park is far better in my opinion. Balboa park can take a whole day in itself and is a must-see. San Diego Harbor, Downtown/Gaslamp District, Coronado, as well as the whole coastline and it's smaller towns are certainly to experience.
hmmm so much to see in california and all I'm thinking is... I want a studio and models and a makeup artist! lol. But that's just me.
All suggestions are nice though id on't think I'd be able to make it to San Fran, pretty far trek considering I work saturdays.
I'm trying to go to Mexico for the weekend of the 18th for my bday. :D Anyone? hehe.
I am in contact with a special effects makeup artist... so If you can make it up my way, we can do ya up right... as well as help with another model shoot I am setting up.
Apparently us California folks can't get our act together. Perhaps we are too laid back? :D
Ya, laid back and surfing. Hey, it's summer. Things to do, people to see. Maybe we should do something during the winter.
For me, my latest out-and-about was "Music at the Zoo." LA Zoo does a night of musical performances around the zoo. What's pretty neat is you can walk around and check out the animals at night.
The only problem with California is that it's so darn big! Maybe you folks down South could organize a springtime GTG to Joshua Trees. Or, a few years ago, there was a terrific GTG at Antelope Valley for the poppies. Of course, that was a spectacular year for poppies which made it even better.
We just had a super GTG up here in the "north" country with about 15 DPCers meeting at Pt. Reyes Seashore for the day.
With fall around the corner, how about a Fall GTG in Yosemite? That way some of our Northern and Central CA DPCr's could join as well. Yosemite is gorgeous in the Fall, and it's not too crowded like Spring and Summer. Rates are lower too for those staying overnight.
The San Diego dSLR Photo Group is shooting Cabrillo National Monument this weekend and a bunch of us are jumping on the twighlight train to Tecate Mexico and back on the 18th of August.
For those of you in the Riverside-ish area there is a sister dSLR group called Inland Empire dSLR that does monthly and picture pal shoots all the time.

OK...enough chit chat...How about San Juan Capistrano...the mission, the town...central enough for most in So Cal...either Sept 15 or some other weekend day in Oct..Anyone?

Ohhh! I haven't been yet! I want to go so very badly!
I'm in Huntington Beach also. I just got back from vacation in King's Canyon. It is the deepest canyon in the United States. That was a beautiful area and not as crowded as Yosemite.
Currently my camera is not working, but when I'm up and running again a GTG would be fun. Fortunately it didn't quit working until after I got back from vacation.
im in nor cal for the time being and will be making several trips to san francisco in the near future. also, i have 3 photo shoots coming up in so cal (san diego and LA). pretty much anywhere in california, im there!
you are all over! Well cool!

"California" is about 800 x 300 miles ... a little big for a statewide GTG. There have been several more localized GTG, including one at Pt. Reyes just a few weeks ago.
If we do San Diego and you need a place to stay I have a pretty big place and can put a couple people up...as long as you like kids since I own two of them.
