I'm going to boost the shaprness, contrast and saturation in my 10D. I might even use my G2 (sorry team 10D) to shoot black and white or Sepia.
In order to get the best exposure I will bracket my shots 1/2 or 1 stop to see what happens. I can't say I've done that before (bracketing) except to test the function. I usually give myself a bit of a buffer in order to crop if needed, but this time I'll have to really study the shot to make sure I do it right. It'll be a different type of challenge; I still expect to see good quality shots. Again, this challenge won't be for everyone, but I'm going to try my best to learn from it.
So am I allowed to shoot in "RAW" or not? Certainly using Capture One to do my conversion to JPEG is "post processing" isn't it?
Raw to me is like a "digital negative"; I haven't shot in JPEG with my camera since the first couple weeks I had it while I was learning its ins-and-outs and wanted the "instant gratification" of JPEGs. Now I won't shoot in anything but raw, which has allowed me to salvage quite a few shots... not to mention work with 16-bit no-compression-artifacts TIFFs for those images I really want top-notch prints from, among other things.
(And I have to agree that point-and-shoot cameras with "Sepia" and "Black & White" settings will have an advantage, especially given the challenge theme.)

Yeah, I second this question. Is conversion from RAW to JPEG OK or do we need to just shoot in JPEG?
I like to leave my camera in RAW mode 'cause I never know when I might see that one in a bijillion shot that could turn out to be the best of all my crappy shots. I might wanna put it in a frame and say, 'til I actually compose something pleasant, THIS is my best crappy shot. :)

The unlimited edits favors some people, the no edits might favor some other people (those people wo are not as good using photoshop, or some other editing tool). Why not give some other photographers a chance. Show what you can do with the camera, not what you can do with post processing.
It seems to me, that there are are some people here who just like to complain. If there was a "cold" challenge, and someone took a picture of a plate of ice cream, someone else would complain that the ice cream is too cold.
If there was a "round" challenge, some would complain that the picture is too round. (Whoops, that already happened!)
I wouldn't like it if every challenge was no-editing. But I'm actually very pleased to have this one that is, mostly because when I saw it I sort of paused in startlement, and started to have that wait-a-minute response.
Then I started thinking. This will make me do something different, again, from what I've been working on here lately. Maybe it won't be the same photo it could have been with editing. Maybe it won't be as good. (Considering my PS skills, the latter's not a certain thing.) But it will force me to work in different terms and to think and grow.
I don't think that's a bad thing at all. I don't think I'd choose to go no-edits in general, but trying to get the best photo that I can while the challenge has that rule may lead to my taking better in-camera pictures (I can hope!), and if it does, that's only going to make edited entries in future challenges that more effective. There is, after all, only so much you can do with any given starting point.

You do realise that 'using capture one to convert RAW to JPEG' means white balance adjustment, saturation, individual channel adjustments, levels adjustment per channel, curves per channel, exposure compensation, contrast adjustment and selective edge sharpening ?
In fact, I don't even bother using photoshop any more, other than for a final sharpening action, now that I use capture one to convert my raws to a JPEG that I'm happy with straight off the bat.
But if you shoot RAW (I don't think I've taken a JPEG in over a year) this is just the basic workflow, I don't even consider it editing, its just required to get a decent digital 'print' from the raw file 'negative'. The idea of 'no edits' on the surface might seem like a good dual of the future 'free editing' approach. But as with a lot of things that sound like good ideas, doesn't make any actual sense at all if you understand how a digital camera works.

Thankfully I am trying different PS skills in all the contests to boost my repetoire. Maybe if I stay after this obsession some of these skills will stick with me and someday I can choose to use "no-edits" or edits and impress some of you with artistic productions the way that you folks impress me. The creativity that I've seen on DPC is to be commended. (OK, playing with Lucas' Star Wars poster was blasphemy but other than that. . . .)

Shhhhh Gordon! You weren't supposed to tell!! :-) (Don't forget "crop" and "resize" too... I really like C1's crop tool, especially with the 'show rule of thirds lines' option turned on.)

what is this capture one business? can someone post a link? i'm new to RAW and am very interested in seeing what it's all about.
QUESTION: is cropping allowed? Does "resizing" include cropping?

I think not -- I think it means take the file straight from the camera and use the "Image Size" command (or equivalent) to set the longest side to no more than 640 pixels.
I just used IrfanView -- I didn't even open it in Photoshop. I DID save an intermediate (resized) TIFF file so that I could adjust the JPEG setting for maximum filesize allowed.

Capture One is a RAW convertion program to produce a useable image.
i didn't know the software was camera-specific. i thought a raw file was a raw file no matter the camera? i am going to poke through the documentation and see what i can find....
I can't believe people are whining about this one. It's ONE challenge for crying out loud. If you want to post process, take a picture that fits the challenge, post process away, JUST DON'T ENTER IT!!!!
Jeese Louise (no offense to anyone named Louise), you would think Drew and Langdon were asking you to run naked through a crowded mall with dobermans after you in the middle of the Christmas season all while throwing hundred dollar bills at everyone you see. It's NOT that big of a deal.
