From Webster himself. alittle different than despair...broader I would say. Despair seems to speak of people; Desolation could, but certainly doesn't have to.
I get the feeling this challenge is going to produce some really powerful images.
I would think desolation could cause despair, and like pedro, I tend to think of despair as more of a "feeling" and desolation and effect on a place or something. But that is just me, and I haven't thought about it a lot, yet.
Yeah, just an "off the cuff" initial thought would be: despair is an emotion and would focus on people, while desolation would focus more on places, locations, environments, maybe things.
Can we found desolation in a person? I think that desolation is not related of a person... I think desolation is impersonal...
It´s just my opinion, what do you think?
the reality -- with as many challenges as we have, there's bound to be some similarities occasionally to past challenge. . .
anyway, i tend to agree that desolation might apply a little more to places than people but i think you should interpret the challenge how you want instead of trying to follow the "herd".
Some of my Despair out takes might do well for this, but that was in the winter when the skies where gray and everything else was brown. Now it is the summer where the skies are gray and well, the grass is growing....
It's hard to give the feeling of Desolation, if the surroundings are the vibrant green of mid-summer. That's not to say it can't be done, it's just harder. Most desolate images that I can think of are mostly colourless or monotone.

I am new here and not sure but don't the photos have to be taken withing the challenge dates? Out takes from another contest would be taken too early right??? Just checking what I thought but may have misunderstood.
I would tend to agree desolation would not focus on people, whereas despair has to. Don't forget that 'desolate' includes 'barren and lifeless' in one of its main definitions, and that is, I think, what most people tend to think of.
That having been said, there's nothing in the definition that rules out a person (or animal) as being part of the picture; the definition goes on to include a sense of abandonment or being forsaken, for instance.
I will be voting on this round whether or not I enter, as it's a topic that interests me. Now you know in general what I'll be looking for -- isolation, loneliness, devastation, barren areas, and the like. (I'd like to enter, I just haven't come across anything that depicts those things.)
I imagine there WILL be a lot of black and white shots, which is a pity. Yes, sometimes it will probably be appropriate, and I imagine sometimes I'll like it, but a lot of black and white photos leave me wishing I could see the colours. I know that puts me in a minority, but given my scores around here this doesn't surprise me. :)
