I've said it before in threads like this, and I'll say it again:
Anytime someone stops to type something in the box below one of my pictures, I regard it as helpful. Why? Because they're using their time to give me feedback about a piece of artwork created by ME. Even one word comments. Even negative feedback. Even words that could be regarded as immature, selfish and stupid observations. Each comment represents a reaction by another person. If someone is reacting to my creation, how could that be bad? Every person is different, and comes to my photo with a unique perspective. However they react is fine by me (I'm not looking for stroking). The fact that they react, I find helpful.

I'll offer the same advice I just gave in another thread - everyone who's posted here and is reading here - go leave 10 comments on free study entries. Better use of your time, I'd wager. :-)

I am positive I will be leaving many more than 10 comments in the free study, in fact I'll be leaving more than 10 comments in every challenge that is in voting right now. I leave a lot of comments, but does that mean I can't "complain" about unhelpful comments, or at least commiserate with the OP?

Nope, you may complain - you do leave comments, and good ones. Just trying to get a few more people to do so as well.
The way I see it, if it doesn't pertain to the picture itself, then your comment is not helpful. Leaving comments that can be construed as personal jabs at the model is somewhat insulting to that model, especially if they are not a professional. Stating the obvious like "studio shot" is not helpful. I don't care what kind of comments you leave me but if it's pointless, I'm not going to mark it helpful. I know it's a studio shot. I was there! Any other photographer would see that too. Why leave a comment saying so?
Heh... I will leave comments when I can give constructive criticism. If something impresses me, I'll tell them why. If I believe the picture is a snapshot, I'll try to tell them why. My track record isn't much because I end up voting and then going back with comments. Most times, I forget.
Ok...here's how I see it. The "pointless" comments come from some that don't have experience in photography. When I see who has given me the comment, 8 out of 10 times, they have no camera and haven't entered any challenges. If you give me a 1, tell me why. That's all I ask. But don't make the comment, "I don't like the color blue", that's not a useful comment. Don't just say "no", that's not a useful comment. These types of threads aren't going to deter commentors from commenting. I would like comments, good or bad but they need to be constructive. This is a learning website, I want to learn from my mistakes.

whoa...I think that is a good comment. To me its still constructive, it means that the photographer made an impact on the viewer/voter with the photograph. So don't apologize. I get tickled when someone leaves me that comment. It means, at least to me, I did something right. You can leave me all the "I like it!" comments on mine you'd like..lol!

I have a hard time not really appreciating ANY comment I receive, as they tend to be few and far between. But whe I receive a comment such as "OK" (on One challenge), and "The title seems a little redundant" I cant help but wonder whats the point? I would even prefer I dont like this, not my style, cool, neat, something that has an actual purpose!
Just my 2 cents.
So, it seems to me that you are saying that it is okay to give a polite and positive comment with no substance but it is not to okay to give a comment that is not flattering but with no substance such as "i don't like".
I am personally happy with almost every comment - except for abusive or simply a number (i've got a few of those..)

Just out of curiosity, how would one react to receiving a comment containing four periods? Nothing else. Just four periods in a row. I suppose I can appreciate the half-a-second it took to press the period key four times, then the quarter-second it took to press send, but to find it useful or helpful in any way? I think that's a bit of a stretch.

I didn't say that, read my post from before. I'll take comments good or bad but I would like them to be constructive, especially if you find the photo bad. I need to learn from my mistakes. Read my post below the reply to Melethia's.
I received a comment "gluggle" and I was terribly offended because it was a picture of my niece. But then I realized that the commentor was drowning and I called the life guard. It was too late, though. Now he's part of the ocean and his comments are devestating.
I'm flat offended period. It is often what causes me to make a picture in the first place. Now, when someone comments on that image, he would decidedly not be able to expand my global outrage at the state of affairs any further.

I have my opinion on what I want comments to be about and you have your's. Lets agree to disagree. I think I have plainly stated that I want constructive critism (sp) If I feel that I don't want to check the comment as helpful, then I don't have to check it. Its Friday, let's have a great weekend!!!

And that is exactly why I try to make my comments as offensive as possible.

"I like the color blue" says to me "I like your picture, in part, because it's blue." So that feels good. Similarly "I don't like the color blue" feels less good because someone doesn't like what we did. So these are "nice" and "not nice" comments.
But neither are "useful" to me.
"Useful" means (to me) "provides some information that helps me improve my photography." The fact that the commenter likes blue doesn't do that, nor does the fact that they don't. Should I start shooting only things that are blue? Nothing that is blue?
I have recieved many nice comments that were not particularly useful (though nice) as well as many not nice comments that were quite useful (despite being, in some cases, rather harsh - "outch, terrible noise, dark, blurry, 2" for instance - marked "useful" because it was).
Useful is, to me, a very different standard than "feels nice to receive" but is still a standard.
