Personally I don't care how many bugs, flowers, cats, dogs, or what have you there are, it's the quality of the shot that counts. If there are a 100 terrific bug shots then that's OK. We all get to appreciate and maybe even learn from some great looking shots. And I have given a record number of 10's for the In The Garden challenge. Good luck to all.

Why do we even have challenge topics if people don't take into account how well the photo fits the challenge when voting?
Based on comments like the above, it sounds to me like somebody could take a great picture of a motorcycle and if it was a high-quality shot with great "wow factor", it could do well "In The Garden"...
Take a look at the last placed photo in the 'liquid' challenge - there's your proof that voters in general take highly into account the meeting of the challenge.

Did you look at the voting breakdown? 41 people actually rated it 4 or higher! Another 41 rated it a 3, 45 rated it a 2. That's 127 people. A lot more than the 81 who rated it a 1... yes, it finished last, but the fact that there are people out there who gave it a 3, 4, 5 or 6 can't possibly be taking into account the challenge topic when voting.
when you log in, there should be an area on the left hand side that has the current votes on your entry, as well as the average score and any comments.

I also feel that fitting the challenge is important. All I'm saying is that if a bug fits the challenge and there happens to be 100 shots of them, whats to complain about if they all have a wow factor.

Part of what I look at when I vote, though, is how interesting an interpretation of the topic is. If I see 50 bug pictures, then, yes, they're not going to get quite as high of a score on average as something I only saw 5 of, all other things being equal.
But 'all other things being equal' takes into account a lot of things. A picture that is on-topic and that doesn't leave me entirely cold will probably make it into the 4-7 range, which itself is still some wiggle room, and even the most common topic in a challenge might still somehow have something I think is special and break into the 8-10 range for me. It really depends. It's just that a particularly common photo subject and setting would have to work a little harder at composition and technical impact to get there for me.
have gone through almost half of the garden shots, just wanted to say that i've seen some pretty amazing close ups. especially of butterflies. wow. i don't know how you people do it. :o)
