I seem to remember other photos that had more than three images, too, if you count three images against another image used as a background. I say let the voters decide -- as they did.

Just the clarify this...I really don't mean to say a background/canvas color or whatever is really an image...To everyone really thinking this or has problems, just move on...It's not like this site is the end of the world or anything.
I'd like to know why it took so long for those images to be DQ'ed when validation requests were put in the first day of voting. Aren't originals supposed to be submitted within 48 hours? I know SC gets lots of validation requests but something as cut and dried as using more than 3 photos doesn't seem too difficult to validate.
And on that point, I believe I read in the forums that if your image is DQ'ed you still get to keep your score, that is, it goes towards your total average. That doesn't seem right to me. You could submit an amazing photo, score really high, have it DQ'ed at the end of voting (not a self-DQ but a regular one) and your high score would benefit you, raising your average.

I didn't use more than three photos. I like to think there was some thoughtful discussion among the SC, and that some of them actually took my side in the issue.

But if you add a background and put a borber around it you are adding image area, which is not allowed.
You may not use ANY editing tool to create new image area, objects or features (such as lens flare or motion) that didn't already exist in your original capture. You may not use ANY editing tool to move, remove or duplicate any element of your photograph that would change a typical viewer's description of the photograph (aside from color), even if the tool is otherwise legal, and regardless of whether you intended the change when the photograph was taken.

what about blending three images, as some people did? blended images don't have borders between them, so in effect you are "adding image area" to each individual photo. There are other examples of a plain background with three photos on it. It's not merely a border in that case. There is no clear way to apply advanced editing rules to a combination of three images. I really don't understand what purpose is served by dq'ing either of us. I realize that people in a competition like to be sure they are competing under the same rules and restrictions, but there is no clarity here anyway.

What you are saying is true about blending three images, if part of one laps into the other this could be seen as creating new image area.
I sent a sample of this before the challenge closed for voting, and was recommended by site council not to use this method.
