My score is very slowly creeping upwards. It's doing better than I expected, as my entry is definately a little different. I expect the down turn soon as I have only had about 40 votes. I haven't had any comments though. So I hope that everyone starts adding comment soon as I would like to know what you guys think.
This is a sincere, honest question, so don't jump on my case. I received a few comments today in a couple of challenges, which were not very "constructive"... to say the least. That's not a surprise, nor the important issue. The issue is...all of the "non-constructive" comments came from people who have never entered a challenge, nor have ever participated in the forums. What's up with that? I was actually surprised!!! Isn't that unusual, or am I a "startled deer in the headlights". I didn't know people would join for voting purposes only. I guess I'm asking why people would join here and never submit an image to a challenge.... only vote on others' images... and leave sort of nasty, derogatory comments????

Richard, I don't see any nasty and derogatory comments on your image. Comments are gifts, take them for what they are - they are people's opinions, and they might even help you.
Personally I think it is fantastic that people would take the time to look and comment even when they themselves don't enter the challenge. And, if anything, I'd like to encourage people to comment more, not discourage them but suggesting that they might not have no place commenting.

Wait, I asked that no one jump on my case! I think it is a legitimate question as to why someone would be a member only for the purpose of voting and commenting on images.
Of course, I welcome all votes and comments. I just, naively, wonder why there would be members who offer "non-constructive" comments on images, while at the same time submit none of their own work (at least under this nom de plume) to the competition. I think there is something wrong here, but I am only the "startled deer in the headlights". What do I know? Nothing!
1. perhaps they just joined and haven't had a chance to enter yet.
2. perhaps they've been a user/member for a while, but haven't gotten up the nerve to enter, yet.
3. perhaps they just joined, and are trying to learn by actively participating (in this case commenting) because they read a forum post somewhere that talked about commenting being a great tool for learning to better look at photography
4. maybe they love photography, but don't have a digital camera, and can't enter
5. maybe they have a digital camera, but it is being serviced and they can't enter.
6. maybe they stumbled upon the site a year (or more) ago, registered, got busy with life and recently "rediscovered" it
7. maybe they like making comments, but don't have the physical ability to get out and shoot what they think is a quality image for the challenge
8. maybe they, like many others on this site (myself, included) thought that the "comment" box was for comments, and they did not have to be critical, constructive or otherwise.
9. maybe they truly think they are being helpful
10. maybe English is not their first language, and they have difficulty saying exactly what they mean.
11. maybe English is their first language, but they have written communication disorders and can't clearly articulate it
12. maybe it hurts too bad to sit at the computer long enough to type a full comment on everyone's picture, and because they want to see as many as possible, they leave short ones.
13. maybe they recognize that the comment, in any form or fashion, is a privilege and not a right, and don't think it has to particularly constructive -- it moved them enough to say something, that should tell you something about your picture.
Very pleased that this is riding above 6. Even though most everything in my picture is symmetrical I was afraid my image might be too boring to get this high.
Looking good so far to replace one of my profile pics.
Me, too, and I'm pretty happy about that, as I really don't like the lowest one on the ladder right now. Let's hope it holds here or near here (started out much, much lower, below 5).

Sorry, but I don't believe you've taken a photo that I would find boring; it's just not what you do.
