That's just your opinion, of course. I'd say they do meet the challenge, as they show an event, which you would go out at night to watch.

But how do you know they went anywhere to watch fireworks? How do you know it is a night on the town? Maybe it was simply a night in the backyard? Those in big cities seem to forget the smaller communities have fireworks displays but they are most frequently set off from a high point in town that can be seen from most of the homes. Without having a person in the photo all you were doing is taking a photo of the night sky.
I will admit I don't vote a 1 when something doesn't meet the challenge unless it is just plain aweful, I think the lowest I gave any of the firworks photos is a 4. The ones with people in them or cityscpes which deplicted a night out I did score much higher.
There was one fireworks shot that was very well done, with people in the foreground that made the photo stand out from the rest. However if you don't have some point of reference than its just a firework shot and doesn't really meet what the challenge was for. IMHO!

I sure that they were out at nighttime to take the shot. Its just that the challenge in my view wanted you to include people out on the town. I'm sure everyone has an opinion on that but this is how I viewed the challenge. I found several fireworks photos very good and several very poor but in all cases this is just IMHO.
I think people should be more lienint with the low scores for not fitting the challenge, since which any one of us is expert enough to say what fits the challenge or not.. and more concerned with the subject and quality of the photo. I'll never understand giving a great shot a "2" for not fitting the challenge, but a crappy photo of something that is percieved to be fitting a "6+". Just my 2 cents...

I find that firework photos are very much a part of "Night on the Town", it isn't often you see fire works out in the country anywhere. Personally, I thought there were some very good submissions there. One firework shot I even gave a 10 to.
If there is a photo that doesn't meet the challenge for me, I only subtract 1 point, 2 in extreme cases. I really can't justify giving a 2 to a photo just because it doesn't meet the challenge topic.
I've finished voting on the "Night on the Town" challenge and have given 5 X 10's, 13 X 9's and my lowest score I gave was a 4. But I guess we all vote differently, right? I enjoyed voting on this one.

I didn't think so at all. Wished there would have been more speedometer shots. I like uniformity. All other things being equal, i would vote higher of course those speedometer shots where the needle points to a higher speed rather than just an itty bitty low speed :)
I went to fireworks as a part of my night on the town in Montreal and I am certainly not going to vote anyone down for a shot of them because I enjoyed my night! Be a little more open minded people.. it might be a 10 because its not your perfect idea of a night on the town, but isn't it conceivable it was someone's night on the town? Fireworks attract thousands of people in cities and I would certainly say they speak about "night life" ;)
I agree with fireworks not fitting the challenge, i didn't submit anything for this challenge buti have fireworks shots that i guess i could have submitted after seeing them all, but didn't because i didn't think it meant 'night on the town'. Am i the only one taking these challenges too literally?

The image has to meet the voters view of the challenge, if I don't think an image meets the challenge than it has failed in my eyes, this obviously works both ways as my submission may not meet someone elses criteria. If we are more open minded surely every image submitted must be taken as meeting the brief?
well, no. I meant to say that the shot might notbe a 10 because it wasn't the voter's particular idea of the perfect night on the town, but that doesn't mean it wasn't someone's night on the town. All I mean to say is I think too narrow a viewpoint of what fits the challenge doesn't benefit anyone. They are ideas to help us figure out something to shoot. A little flexibility is good. Even with an open mind about it, there are many shots that would not be suitable for the challenge, such as bobsterlobster's hilarious picture of the grumpy chicken, or sonifo's dusty roads..or many other great shots. I'm not asking for a free for all, but just a bit of flexibility. Fireworks are a nighttime shot, and they are something people go see for amusement and entertainment at night..that's pretty close to the challenge in my opinion.

No, it doesn't.. in fact, the dpc rules forbid genitals. Or at least forbid them from appearing in photos.
I was very much mocking the idea of so strictly interpreting challenges, have no worries.
