In my wallet (billfold). Or at least I should. Normally its in the same pocket as my wallet with the part that faces the lens towards my wallet. I also purchased a spare. Nothing like losing a lens cap then wondering what the heck to do with the unprotected lens when you aren't using it.
ETA - The lens cap for my Sigma 70-300 MM just goes into the back where the lens comes from. The lens hood protects it well enough when its out which is only when I am using it
Who was it that had kids and put his lens cap in his coat pocket. The same coat pocket one of his kids put used gum or a sucker stick or something which got transfered to the front of his lens?
Pocket. Depending on what I'm wearing, either pants, or whenever possible, shirt/coat breast pocket.
I've been thinking about grabbing a vest for when I'm out (I'll end up looking like "that guy", oh well.) - the one that I've had my eye on has like 4000 pockets of varying sizes and shapes and locations. Perfect for filters and caps and pens, and whatever else I need.
I have only lost one...at a restaraunt so I guess I'm lucky. It usually goes in my left back pocket cause my right hand has my camera in it and that rarely gets let go. I thought of putting it back in my bag but for some reason I can't do it. My replacement cap has a strap on it but I don't like it dangling from the lens so I don't use it.
btw...noisemaker...you need a camera bag lol you carry too much stuff for not having one.
a lot of the time i just palm it in my left hand while i shoot, replace it when i'm not shooting. maximizes lens protection, yet it can go on and off very quickly and easily as needed. if it needs to be off for a while, i'll then put it in a plastic sandwich bag (which goes in my pocket, attaches to tripod, or in camera bag depending upon circumstances).
left back pocket with the car keys, passenger car seat or on the console, camera bag, jacket pocket, picnic table, the dirt at my feet, wherever.... I have trained myself to return it to it's resting place so I have only lost 3 so far! Lens cap leashes are a pita.
I 'do' keep filters on the lenses at all times skylight usually. If you think I am guilty of lens cap abuse you should see where I take the camera! Dirt arenas in windstorms often, sand dunes, gypsum dunes (white sands), underground coal mines..... (my 'L' lens got to skip that trip)

Random pocket which I forget about, then when I need to put it back on I search all my pockets for it.
I have occasionally worn my photographer's waistcoat which has about 11 squillion - fetches weskit and counts - actually, 9 pockets. It's enough to make a fair comedy show every time I want to put the lens cap back on though (finding it in a trouser pocket, as often as not).

i actaully have a little canon cf wallet, its pretty nice leather and can hold 2 cards. so 1 in camera an 2 in wallet ( i have 3 2gig ultra II's)
