I think people are taking this thread a bit too serious. It began as a casual posting of grammar pet peeves. No one was attacking anyone or calling anyone stupid. Sheesh.
One of my closest friends uses the word "loose" instead of "lose" all the time among other things yet that hasn't stopped him from getting ahead. I guess those multiple degrees including a masters in business/economics and his hard work might have something to do with it. However, the more I think about it the more I feel he could have gotten further if only he had used the word "lose" when he meant "loose"!
I do however, find whining about it in a forum to be a bit ridiculous.
I agree with this for internet forums in general. I agree even stronger in the case of a forum where not all participants are native speakers.
I often get the feeling that grammar-whiners either have noting else on their hands (get a life guys) or finally found something that they ARE good at.
I'm pretty sure I said that I have nothing else on my hands. (Actually I inplied it, but apparently you did not infer the same...) ;)

I think it's generally pretty obvious when English is not your first language. The patterning is different, the word choices slightly different from the American vernacular. I think you're reading a bit too much into it. I'm talking about when you're from Chicago, write like a second grader, and somehow expect to be taken seriously.

DPC should implement a spell/grammer checker when composing a new forum message. Technically, it shouldn't be that hard to do. Many other forums have at least spell-checking capability.
I cant bring myslef to use the short cuts when texting on the phone. Being a migrant, Mum always told us kidsw how important it was to speak and write properly. I dont care if others use it as long as they know the correct way to write. Also wen people dont talk properly how will they ever spell properly. Some people 'arks' a question about a 'pacific' subject.

...you get the idea. Here's the problem: Something is either unique or it is not. Uniqueness does not exist in degrees. If something is unique, it is the only one of its kind; it can't be more or less than anything if it's the only one. Item A could be more or less unusual or innovative or creative or original than Item B, but it can't be more or less unique.

THANK YOU! i've been wanting to whinge about this for ages, but haven't had the guts. yes, i know i type with no capitals; that's just laziness on my part. but i do use correct grammar, and even go back and correct any typos in comments and posts if i catch them after posting. i guess the bibliophile/pedant/teacher in me will just never die.
pet peeve, of many - adjectives used as nouns, and vice versa: female is an adjective. a female athlete, a female cat, etc. it is not a noun! woman is a noun. therefore, a woman lawyer is wrong! it should be a female lawyer.
sorry. it drives me absolutely batty.
