Saving ANYTHING in Photoshop is not an original. The file must be exactly as it was recorded by the camera on your flash media card. Hint; your camera's sensor is horizontal, so if your "original" in portrait orientation, it has been rotated.
With the known caveat that most cameras have an orientation sensor whose value is also a part of the "original" EXIF which most programs use to set the orientation in the display.
If you actually change the file name, yes. If you Save As and don't change the file name, you'll get the "are you sure" message. If you say "yes" there, you've just erased your original.

Question for SC: Do you check the EXIF data when someone submits an entry for pre-approval? If they downloaded via an inappropriate method, wouldn't it be caught at this stage?
Not necessarily. There's no real "pre-approval," since an entry could be swapped with another image before the voting starts. We normally just offer opinions on whatever editing question prompted the approval request.
If I load my files onto my hard drive from a card reader, then open that folder using Photoshop CS2's "Bridge", browse through the thumbnails, click on a jpeg to look at it, then close that jpeg without doing anything to it at all, does that invalidate the jpeg for DPC's validation purposes?

NAH. It should not touch it at all. Just cut and paste or copy and paste the files directly to your hard drive and those copies (or pastes) will be fine. As long as you don't change them THEN save them as the SAME file name, they will always remain pristeen. You can even play with some PP and rotate them and whatever you want as long as you don't save it over the ones that you originally copied or cut and pasted to your hard drive.
what about changing the name of an nef file? It would be nice to be able to rename the photos as i put them into a folder....and since it does not change any of the data in the raw file....can I do that?
the best thing is not to hassle with a site that gets so paranoid over whether a person rotates or doesn't or uses the transfer software that comes with the camera
just not worth the hassle and I haven't found a second way to transfer the images other than with the usb kodak transfer . somewhere you just have to trust people to be honest and straightforward, but really this site isn't worth that kind of neurosis of worrying about whether or not the file transfered off the camera is genuine when all I did was open it or rotate it.
it's for the birds. there are too many other places on the internet which are more realistic and less paranoid about such things.
and how would I know if I didn't do anything else? it's easy because I keep all my duplicate resized images for that reason and I haven't any commercial editing software and hate tampering with images.
Sometimes a person's integrity and values are far more important that a site's restrictive rules and demands. have fun going neurotic.
Site Council, THANK YOU for clarifiying the existing rules for us, and for having these rules in place so we all know what is expected of us. And for enforcing the rules so that this can be a site where we can participate knowing that people are starting fairly from the same place that we are.

The only thing I've often wondered about is whether using the rotate buttons in 'Windows Picture and Fax Viewer' has any effect on the file.
I remember a discussion about this that concluded that using rotate in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer *does indeed* alter the file.
So I'd just be safer than sorry and not do it.
Eek, now I have to look at all my photos sideways to decide whether they have potential as challenge entries. That will hurt.
Take a picture you don't care about (or a copy of one you do) and right click on the thumbnail within widows explorer and click on rotate thumbnail. Check the file size after this and you will see that it is smaller. Keep rotating it and keep checking the file size. It gets smaller and smaller every time. As for opening the file in Windows Picture Viewer you can rotate it there to look at. Just don't save it.
I don't think you get a choice now with Vista... Move off the image and poof, it's saved.
okay we understand that we can not rotate the image in image viewer but unless we tell you, how can you tell that we flipped it outside of an allowable image editing software?
If you do any change to a file I think that the Metadata of the file then has two dates,
Original date shot: original date and time of shot
Modified date : date and time that it was modified
where it has the same date under both of these if it hasnt been changed
I have to say that I dont find this a problem at all. I always download from a cardreader using Windows Explorer and Copy, drag and drop where I want the files to be. Looking at a file sideways is really no problem either, lets face it you can get a reasonable idea of whether you want to bother with editing it or not and if you feel you do want to then just drag it into your photo editing software, rotate it and then Save As. I always add "Edit" after the file name if I have done ANY changes on a file even minor ones so I am left with the original file and one underneath that with Edit in the title. Then again if you write your files to your Hard Drive and then backup onto DVD or CD or external hard drive, then you done have to worry because you will always have an extra copy of the original and this is a good habit to get into, disasters do happen and I would be devastated if my hard drive crashed and I lost everything without a backup.
I dont think that SC is being neurotic at all, they are just trying to keep a level playing field, we have had more than just a few intentional "cheaters" over the past year or so changing Exif data etc. Prevention is better than cure.
Question. I put the CF card into the slot on my computer and everything happens automatically where the files all go to Photoshop Elements 5.0. I never hit save at any point its all automatic. Does pse50 change anything? If so how do I make it so that it isn't automatic and I can preserve the original intact? I currently have a validation request and have submitted two originals but, it apparently isn't the original? How'd that happen? I read this thread for the first two pages when it started and deduced back then that since I don't hit save and this program wasn't mentioned in the beginning as one of those that alter files then I was okay. Now however I'm afraid I somehow went wrong?

It might. Whether to transfer files or execute a script when a disc/card is inserted is probably somewhere in the PSE Preferences. I suppose there might be some kind of system preferences associated with the card reader device -- if you can't find anything in PSE, try going to Control Panel (I'm guessing you're running Windows) and check if there's anything referencing the card reader.
