A strap is as strong as the weakist link. So far it's been holding up. Recently I bought a Quick-Release strap from Tamrac.
It seems the plastic clips are strong enough, I couldn't pull it apart by tuging on it. I haven't tried to hook it to a tow rope on a vehicle, yet. Whe I walk or run I usually have a hand on my 80-200 lens, just in case and to keep it from swaying around.
Has your neck strap ever snapped or come undone while around your neck?
never ... never ... NEVER say that again. it's a frightening thought that sends chills up my spine. :)
i use the D200 strap that comes with the camera. i figure that's good enough for now ... i don't like the words NIKON D200 on it in big letters, so i'll probably replace it before i travel abroad again.
I replaced both of my Canon straps with OptiTech ones as soon as I bought the cameras. Its a much more comfortable strap and (knock wood) I have never had a strap failure.
lol...seriously though If you are that worried about why don't you just have two on your camera that way if one fails the other will hold up. I have never had that problem, or even heard of a strap breaking. I would think you could see if it was going to break soon though.
Once, but I had it threaded wrong. Fortunately, it was more of a slow unraveling sort of thing than a quick snap, so I noticed and the camera only fell about an inch before I caught it.
Neck straps have never failed me, but the strap on my old bag broke once dropping the D50, Nikkor 70-300 and the 12-24 to the ground... that was a bit of a shock.
Call me crazy, but I don't use the strap. They get in the way, are apt to get tangled or pulled and I just plain don't like them either.
You know how you can bump your elbow sometimes and it makes your hand open -- I watched a friend drop his Olympus one time because he bumped into a brick corner. I've never gone without a strap since. Its just too easy to have THAT moment.

Call ME crazy - my favorite way of shooting is rollerblading through town, shooting candids as I go. I have not yet fallen, but the day I do I will tell myself 'told you so'. But it is worth the chance, though I am using my L glass usually when I do this. Doh!
But, I do use the strap, and it has not failed me to this day :-)
Never had the strap broke. Had lucky catches before though. Just simply looking through pictures, and just cannot hold onto that camera! Also dropped a framed picture on my old camera, but it just dented the back. Phew.
Get an Op/Tech Pro Strap, about $18. super comfortable, very strong and doesn't advetise to every crack head 'hey, steal this nikon i have around my neck please!'
I used to use a strap in a past life - but now just gets in the way.
Much easier without. I find it easier to keep the camera out of view until needed.
