I'm being the devil's advocate - my entry isn't snow-based ...
and I wasn't too excited about snowy entires with no ice ... but technically snow is made of small ice particles - however, as it has been said, it is snow ... and typicall people say "snow and ice" or "snow or ice".
But at that point it is water, not snow or ice. Snow is snow and ice is ice. When we say we are having an ice storm, that means something different than when we say we are having a snow storm, right?
Come live in a climate that gets a lot of snow, ice, sleet, freezing rain and you'll quickly realize that snow and ice are two very different things. Snow is not ice, ice is not snow.
If snow and ice are the same thing, why would we give them different names?
I agree. Snow is not ice.
That's like saying a Herkimer diamond isn't quartz. Snow = crystals of ice... essentially ice in its most perfect form. This is one of the dumbest arguments I've ever seen on DPC, but I'm sure we'll top it again next week. :-/

No, it's not. All may be water, but ice is water in its frozen form. Let me guess.... you don't think hail or sleet are ice either? If it was a close macro, how would you know the difference?

I know it is a dumb argument...but it's sooooo funny. And is just a testament to different a word literally means to everyone.
If the challenge were to take a picture of snow, it would have been called snow. We all know that ice and snow and sleet and hail are very similar, but the all have their differences as well. This challenge is entitled Ice, thus I expect to see ice as a major element to get good marks from me. Period.
Sorry if I ruffled some feathers - I just thought this a more entertaining argument than the "how many pixels can be black" argument going on in the low key thread. :)

If it were a frozen water challenge and you entered ice, snow, hail, or sleet would that be DNMC??
unfortunately many tend to be literalists when it comes to challenges like this one. they want obvious clear frozen water darnit ... I haven't seen any diamonds or Mob-related innuendo which might fit under "ice" and probably be under-rated ... but I haven't gone thru them all.

I wonder how many "That's not furniture" debates we'll have next week. :-) IMO (and I'm not entered into this one so I'm not biased in any way) snow is made up of tiny ice particles, so I would still consider it in the "ice" category.

Gee... I hope your entry doesn't look like a large, blocky hailstone. It would be unfortunate for such a lovely chunk of ice to be DNMC in an ice challenge. :-/

But from comments in this thread and the score i have after 20 or so votes i am beginning to wonder how severe people are in their voting and conception of something "original" as in the frozen flowers comment (mine isnt a frozen flower btw)... what is a "normal" score? because being as objective as i can i would put my entry at least in the top 3rd of the shots there but i am on a score of around 4.2.

I can almost guarantee you that you can't be objective when looking at your own photos.
