I'm guessing I would then have to go into my computer, get into Drive:F, which is my camera, and do something from there?
Every time I download something from my camera in a jpeg and open it in Viewer, read properties/EXIF data, it says Date/Time created, then Date/Time modified.
I'm assuming that's what you mean by the doinking by the transfer software, 'cause I have hundreds of untouched jpegs in My Pictures and EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM says that about the "modified on" if it's in my box.
I don't have a slot for my camera card in my computer.
Hence my worry.

I'm not really upset or anything, but you have to understand that I'm stepping up because at this point my interest in being able to participate is stronger than my need to tell you to go piss up a rope for laughing at me......and overcomes my embarrassment at admitting how little I know.
And......I'd like you to try and understand that it's hard to learn this when I don't even know *what* to ask.

If someone wishes to push the attitude he was, then yes, I'm going to reply with a tongue-in-cheek answer in the hopes that it opens eyes and points out how silly that attitude really is.
Maybe some beautiful and patient member out there wants to create some kind of basic how to (with pictures) for folks? It'd be good to have around anyways, just because there will always be new folks coming in.

@ Nikon: I have a card reader, but you don't really need one. When you connect either the card reader or camera to your computer, most times a dialog box will pop up. By dialog box, that means "Do you want to transfer files to your wherever by Picasa? There are probably some other options like "Do you want to burn a CD?" CANCEL THIS
Go to Start/Programs/Accessories/Windows Explorer. (Or however you want to get Windows Explorer open.) Navigate to the drive that will show your pix on the memory card. Select the ones you want, then hit Copy. Then navigate to the spot on your computer hard drive where you keep your untouched originals. Hit Paste. Then navigate to the spot on your computer hard drive where you keep your working files. Hit Paste again.
If you don't want to keep two sets of files on your computer, just paste them once. You can then either burn a CD of the images on your card before they ever get transferred anywhere, or delete them after voting on the challenge ends.

I know that, and had hoped that you understood that what I was trying to convey was a little of the terror that us "challenged" types go through when we hear, or see, something that affects what we are doing, need to do, or are supposed to do here, and we want to but not only can't we, but it's sometimes intimidating to ask.....if for no other reason the frustration of not knowing where to start.
Fortunately, the challenged masses have me whose desire to figure this sh*t out overcomes his fear of humiliation enough to have a public tantrum, bang on my high chair, and learn something.
That said, I know one of my biggest problems is not even knowing enough to ask 'cause sometimes I don't even know whether or not I have a problem.
I guess it is something that everyone who participates should know, but I wasn't aware that you had to validate your entry if you get a Top 5, or maybe even Top 10.....see, I *still* don't know.

You know.. I have no idea. Might be something to look into and perhaps get set up if there isn't. I know I remember *something*.. but pete help me if I can remember what, or where, or how to get there.
Just for giggles.....what kind of camera takes 8MB picture files?
Yours would come close, if you shot in RAW. My camera's RAW files are actually closer to 10MB
That's why I asked.....mine are generally 5.01 to about 5.7 MB.
I *do* know how to shoot in RAW, I have a mentor here at DPC that viciously beat me with a 2X4 until I learned to shoot only in "M", setting my camera with that little thingie called an exposure meter that has apparently been in my viewfinder.....THE WHOLE TIME I'VE HAD IT!!!!!
I just cringe at the thought of asking him to teach me more 'cause I have taken up sooooooooo much time of his.
I directly blame him for my ribbon and he completely changed my world behind the camera and my ability to capture it.
I'm not going to mention any names (cutlassdude70) but this guy is really something and helped me to not get frustrated at my scores.......which is good.....8>)
One of my Team Suck-mates told me how to use the thingie on my camera to take NEF and jepg Basic at the same time so I didn't have to figure out how to upload a RAW file to validate......but I think I'm going to give up on that and just go to a wireless place if I need to from now on.

Have there been cases where exceptions have been made? I have seen DQ's to some of the longstanding members with multiple ribbons be DQ'ed for this reason. I am curious if there have been cases where you have looked passed the valid original. Or is this just a case where this thread is more of a formal reminder to everyone.

Renamed should be OK, but I recommend you raise a help enquiry and submit both untouched and renamed copies of the same file, so that we can doublecheck for you.
