I add a border most of the time - to me it's a "finishing touch".
Most often it's just a plain white border, but sometimes I add a colored border, or even a frame type border, if I feel it could add something to the picture.
IMO a border definately adds the final touch and if the right border is chosen, it can add to the impact of a photo. On the other hand, a badly chosen border can be worse than having no border at all!
I normally change my border three or four times before I decide on the final one. (Maybe that's just a woman thing..lol)
Thanks for the input. The problem I was having is this. I have a black & white photo and I couldn't decide whether a black border or a white one would look best. I changed my mind about 6 times.

Obviously, using PS there's more than one way of doing everything and thus it gets confusing. Is there a preferred method here?

I like ctrl+A (select all), then EDIT / STROKE.... and choose the stroke size & color in the pop up
For competition purposes on any of the sites I participate in I don't use a border unless it is in a digital Art category. For prints and cards I sell, I often use borders.

Me too :) As far as the border on a print goes, that is oftentimes a must because printers sometimes have a heavy hand and end up cutting off part of your image if you don't stick at least a 20px border on it :)
I think a white border for printing is a good practice, for matting, cropping etc.
Personal taste on portfolio images, I like to use borders for larger images, mostly on my Pbase pics.
There are some awesome examples of borders I have seen lately ... but be darned if I could find one of them in half an hour ... ROFL ...
On a lot of my prints for DPC I put 50 pixels of black, 25 pixels of white, then another 50 pixels of black. Check out my Frosty Morning series in the link below ...
I've given up on borders on DPC since too many people don't like them. However, I will sometimes add a very slight border to a photo if the photo background is too similar to the site's gray background, just to distinguish the boundary a bit more.
