if you are looking for something longer, I can reccomend the new sigma 50-150 2.8. I got one a few weeks ago and it's really impressed me a lot. It's very small and light for a constant f/2.8 lens but still feels quite solidly built. Normally I travel with quite wide lenses but this will be making it's way into my kit as well.
Where in Mexico? I've been to Mexico numerous times and I can't think of anything there that I needed a big telephoto for. Maybe the occassional parrot in the mountains but they usually come land on your drink anyway ;). Lots of interesting stuff to shoot in the places I've been, but I could do them all with my 24-105 or even just my 50mm and my feet.
ya thats what i was thinking, ive never been so i dunno what kinda lens id need. Keep the opinons coming, i got awhile before im going so i need many ideas to sort through.
edit: After thinking about it i will probably get the 28-75 or similar only cuz i like to shoot landscapes and this would fit the bill. That will save money for extras. I already have a good lightweight tripod that will do the job. So i think ill use the extra $$ for filters and other fun extras, maybe a remote or something, and for fun things while im there ie// parasailing and the like. Thanks for the help guys, keep the suggestions coming though, something better might pop up. I like the wide side of the 28-75, is there anything equally sharp that can maybe go a little further so ill have more range to play with?
Ok so you've got mountains behind you, beach in front of you, Los Arcos is nearby. Probably make a good combo out of your 50mm and a wide angle. Lots of nice scenery around for landscape type shots. If you do any of the horseback rides you'll see that about a mile behind the tourist glitz is a complete armpit where the locals live in poverty. Probably get a lot of nice shots with your 50 in there.

I think this will be my shopping list for the next while, how does it sound:
28-75 (what about 28-135 IS like what was suggested in the 2nd post)
Extra battery + battery grip
Filters (not sure what yet, suggestions?)
backpack, perhaps some belt holders so i can keep my lenses close to me to help with the whole getting stolen thing.
Remote perhaps, though i doubt ill use it much while im there. I just really want one lol.
am i missing anything? That all should be well within my budget.
The most bang for your buck will be with the 70-200 f/4L in my opinion.
You have now, 18mm on the wide end, and when used at f/8 - f/11, will yield pretty darn good pics. Your 50mm will give you dof creativity, portraits and low-light capabilities. The 28-75mm Tamron is an amazing lens, but will be duplicating some of the focal range you already have.
Knowing what I know now, the 70-200mm f/4L would be my next choice, then when finances allow, upgrade the kit lens with the Tamron 28-75mm, then further down the road, the next step would be the Canon 10-22mm for wide angle and landscapes.

Well I am a firm believer don't knock it till you try it kind of attitude. I have a 20mm prime, 35mm prime, and a 105mm prime. You know what, I think that 20mm is too wide for landscapes, even on 1.5 crop. I tend to use my 20mm for candids and indoors. However, this is the way I shoot. Landscapes don't have to be ultra wide angle. I've seen superb landscape shots at 75mm and higher.
My main point is, it seems silly to double up on lenses on a similiar focal length; unless you have tried longer lenses and agree they aren't your style or if you think you need the aperature. You could always try a rental place if you have the time and see if it is something you would like to buy.
Something a bit wider than the 28 might be nice but just those two would make a nice pair, sure.

Heheh. If it were me I'd only take two lenses. My 50 and the 24-105 and I'd be fine. But that's me and shooting sunsets isn't my bag really (and the 24-105 is fairly expensive).
Sorry man. There's never an easy answer. Just delay your trip and pick up 10-22, 24-70, 70-200 2.8 and you're set ;).

Baah so many opinions!!! My 18-55 seems a little wonky, i dont like how the pictures turn out at all really. I think the 28-75 may be the better bet but i dunno. What about if i got like the 28-75 anda 1.4x teleconverter?? After thinking it over i really do want to get 1 lens, i dont wanna stretch my budget too far as i have other things i want to get.

Anyone who has been to mexico, what would i use a 70-200 for really? Im mostly going to be doing landscape shots, family pictures and such. I have a feeling probably 80-90% will be fairly close shots. After the trip I will eventually get BOTH of the previously suggested lenses but for now i can only afford one.

id love to but thats quite a bit over budget atm. Its hard for me atm as im working parttime so something like that will have to wait awhile.
As for what you said bout the streets and stuff, i think i will get the 28-75 unless someone can convince me otherwise.
I was in Peru last fall and hardly ever took the kit lens off of my camera (I didn't own the Tamron 28-75 at the time) ... the mountains and landscapes were so vast and beautiful that my 50mm and 70-300 weren't even close to wide enough ... BUT, since I got the Tamron 28-75 it hasn't come off of my camera ... that lens is amazing ... that's my vote anyway! FWIW, I got mine used off of eBay ... it's in mint condition and the transaction was flawless ... I saved a bundle too ... might be worth looking into ...
