Yes, I did see the winner from the previous challenge. I wouldn't have doubted it for one minute, but if he had started a thread on whether or not it was OK for his wife to trip the shutter, imagine the controversy.

The self timer for my camera lets me set up to a 9 hour time delay. If I take a picture of myself, while asleep - does that count ?
I could set up a 9 hour time delay for my camera, but my Battery would die long before then. And how do you stand still that long with a smile on your face anyways?
Personally I'm OK with someone else pressing the button - depending on what the shot is sometimes 10 seconds is simply not enough to get into position.
But if the camera has been positioned, focused and everything else set up then having someone press the button is, to me, no different to using a cable release - and since some people don't have those - what the heck.
Really, it's more about the composition and content of the image and about who made ALL the decisions about that and about the camera settings - not about who pressed a button.
I found the largest mirror in the house, set my tripod up with a short remote and took the shot myself. I reversed the image so that if I had enough hair to part it,it would have been on the correct side:)
First I wanted to do that too but our main mirror is in the bathroom where we have poor light and also, more importantly, is pretty old and has black streaks where the mirror surface has gone funny, all over it.
In the end, in the one I submitted, I ended up holding it with one arm outstretched and doing the oddest dance trying to stay upright and had to guess whether I was in frame or not because I don't have a movable LCD panel!

BTW, i didn't submit for self-portraits; had some nice ideas but just didn't have the time. However, my mug has been featured already on dpc, so it isn't that i'm a chicken (profile and negative space submission). However, before i make any self-portraits, i need to get my wild Beethovenian manes trimmed and in order to do that, i need to find a new hairdresser since my current one makes it way too short and during my last visit in Dec undid the six months of effort to get it all long again.

I disagree. it can be extremely difficult to set things with a timer properly. As long as you came up with the conceptual idea and it is taken with equipment and setup that you prepared, it doesn't matter who trips the shutter. If I have my girlfriend hold the camera at the angle I instruct her, have her focus and press the shutter, it is still a self portrait.

that was actually the dictionary definition. "by oneself." But it actually wouldn't change my vote if it didn't look like it was taken solely by the photog. Might actually make me give a higher score based on the "how'd he/she do that?" factor.
Well, poor lonely me! I live by myself so I had nobody to trip the shutter for me. I had to do it the hard way....use stuffed animal to focus...frame...set self timer...run...throw bear to one side...and pose! I like the results.

I ended up taking the 'photo' all by myself, with that one arm stretched right out lol. Ended up taking like 50 photos because I needed to get my 'face' in the frame with no help lol. I had loads of fun!! Can't wait to see everone else's pics. GL everyone.

I did pretty well the same thing. Didn't take myself too seriously. I don't feel I'm very photogenic at the best of times and being so close to camera didn't help matters. :)
With that said I don't think we need to be overly critical in our voting for this challenge; I'm sure some will disagree; this is essentially a way to put faces on the personalities we have in this great online community.
On another point, I think if someone is so gracious as to press a button for you once you've set all the parameters on your camera, it shouldn't be grounds for a DQ. In any case it's a moot point given that it would be so difficult to prove.
