Take heart, I comment on what I consider to be a really good shot and some of the not so great shots that could do with some improving.. Hence I must have thought yours was ok!
Well i find that i just dont have the time to leave comments on every photo. If a photo 'grabs me by the ba**s' then i will comment. I dont think i have ever given a 10 to anyone but have dished out a few 1's ..
it's been said before but...if you're dishin' ones, you better be splainin' yourself. A photo REALLY has to suck to get a one in my books. Like if the topic is "shoes", and you submit a picture of a sweater vest. THAT would suck. otherwise, comments are necessary.
It does that to me, if the page times out or I get the 'page cannot be displayed' message, and then I hit refresh to try again. I found out that even if it does this, the message will still go through and DO NOT hit refresh, or it will post twice.

Sometimes it is so clear that a person has put no effort into the shot at all, and I don't feel it worthy of me wasting my time to tell them that it sucks, because quite frankly they probably know anyway.

So 'splain to me how in my first challenge I got an average score around 6.5, which included both 1s and 10s. How on earth could one person's 10 be another's 1, if it's so clear?
don't get me wrong - vote what your guts tell you, and I'm not bitching about my scores...I'm just saying an extreme score deserves an explanation, unless it is - as I mentioned - a picture of a sweater vest when it should be shoes.
explain pedro?! - when i see the results of a challenge i see some that i voted say a 4 in the top 10 and some i voted higher say a 7 or an 8 way down. Its clear to the indiviual and we all see things differently. 'One mans meat..' and all that.
Both Pedro and Chinstrap have a point. If you have a good picture that ends up over 6.0, you really like to know the reasons for the 1-3 votes, or better yet WHO gave those ridiculously low scores. Like Chinstrap, i don't want to waste my time explaining a crap shot that i give a 1. I used to always make comments with my occasional 1 votes. Actually, i think that just adds insult to injury. If you end up with a low score you already know the bad news, i.e. it IS a crap shot, and no need to have that rubbed in any further.
In the last two weeks, i made my scoring tougher, fewer 8-10s and more 1-3s, because i felt needing the whole 10 point range.
Again, what i very much like to see is OPEN VOTING which would give a lot of feedback, much more so than the comments.

You summed up my point for me in the end - 'one man's meat...'. You said earlier that "we all know when we post...one that sucks". My point then, is this: if I submit one that deserves a 1, I should know it and expect a one. But if I'm also getting 10s, there's clearly some incongruence in people's opinions. Therefore, I'd like to know WHY you think it's a 1, while others think it's a 10.
I'm not taking a shot at you in particular Chinstrap, I just think I can be a better photographer if I learn the things that REALLY move someone, both good and bad. A vote of 1 or 10 would suggest that the voter either loves or hates it. If I get few comments, I know most are ambivalent to it.
@Journey - not sure I agree with open voting (although the summaries give us a clue what a person's voting is like) or not. If a picture sucks for some reason, I'm less concerned with WHO thinks it sucks than I am with WHY they think it sucks. make sense?

If there's open voting you could see for instance that photog whom you respect give you good scores and the 1-3 come from unknowns or or from those whose skills you don't greatly think of or vice versa or from whom you know for a fact that the subject material is not to their liking. So, you would be getting much better feedback on roughly 240 votes rather than on 5-25 comments (most comments tend to be favorable ones anyway with the occasional nitpick).

Very good point. I got hammered on "Spot" which was an intentionally overblown picture, shot directly into the sun. I got high marks (with comments) from some of the people I respect on the site, and negative comments from some (not all don't anyone go and get all offended, now) whose opinions wouldn't carry as much weight. So I took that as meaning people with good taste liked it (see how I spun that to make myself feel better?)
The obvious problem with open voting is people's reluctance to be mean, and the voting would likely go from a 1-10 scale, to a 4-10 scale. And can you IMAGINE all the whines about "Hey Helene - how come you gave me a two? you don't LIKE me?"

ps I don't think you get to count your shadow as a picture of you on the site (reply to another thread) I think you're too shy to enter self-portrait. ;)

I know you're just pulling my leg (i have been called many things, some good, some bad, but never shy) but i have been working very hard on fixing the deck these past two weeks. However, i will try to carry out my self-portrait ideas in the coming week or so and post them in my portfolio here. So, if you happen to see there a picture of a cow, that might well be me.

I agree with those who say they'd like comments on their low scores. Sometimes I do think that my shot won't do super-well, but sometimes I have posted a shot where I thought "oh, I could see that in the top 10" and it didn't even make a 5 1/2! Why not? Not sure, if you don't comment.
Comments tell me things that I can learn from, things that may seem obvious to you but are not to me. For example, my "liquid" pic with the nail polish -- I didn't even notice the table, because to me it looked like a table. I was so close to the subject I just ignored it visually. But the comments telling me that the yellow strip was distracting made me see it, and I would do things differently if the challenge came up again.
I don't know many people who would take the time to upload a photo THEY thought was a "1" -- therefore, if you dish out a 1, I'd like to know why. Tell me it sucks, but tell me WHY, so that I know my deliberate use of contrast, or my deliberate blur, or my deliberate something-else-artsy didn't work. Or that you REALLY hate nail polish. It *does* make a difference why you think it sucks, because no matter how obvious it is to you, it's not always obvious to me. :)
