OK, my $0.02 US:
For those of you that don't know about server side image manipulation it does have some problems and can make a mess of an image real quick.
Don't believe me? Go upload a photo that is 1024 pixels in width to Myspace. In many cases it will make a mess of them when it resizes down to 600 pixels in with. I've seen it too many times. I'll go look at someone's profile and there proudly displayed by the member is one of my photos and it's a MESS - sharpness is gone, JPEG artifacting everywhere, just icky. Same thing with Model Mayhem.
Now, I give models 600 pixel wide photos for myspace and I get much better results.
It's not a problem with Myspace, but rather a problem with letting a computer make decisions that they aren't (at present) able to make. This works ok for sites like Myspace, because it's not an art site and MOST of the photos on it are horrible anyway.
But, DPC is a photography site. Server side manipulation of photos would be a really, really bad thing, especially with the detail and care we put into our images.
