There are still companies that are working on smaller and smaller footprint hard drives, so I wouldn't be surprised to see the flash memory give way to a hard drive based iPhone somewhere down the road, expanding memory capacity to iPod-reasonable levels. And as with everything, prices will fall, features will improve, and the thing will get even cooler.

yep right after we buy the $499 iPhone then a flash/hard drive based iPhone will come out and it will be cheaper. Thats how it always is with apple.
Looks to me like the beginning of the end for Apple. The front page at apple.com now has literally nothing Macintosh on it, it's all iPod, appletv, and iPhone. Having used Macs for 20 years, this looks to me like Apple has forgotten its roots. If they stop paying attention to their core product then they'll just become yet another maker of irrelevant gadgets.
So here's a practical question for everyone salivating over this thing. It's the classic problem of having a single device do so much.
The mp3 portion goes on the fritz. You have to send it in for service. What do you do for a phone in the meantime? Basically, one thing on it breaks and you have to replace the entire thing...
Well I didn't read the entire thread but I read about this phone when it was announced (it is my business so I have to) and must say that i am very suprised that it is not 3g. one of the features they were boasting is that it can browse real websites (for the record many other smart phones can too) but if it is not 3g then it will take forever. seems like a big downside for $600.

No, No, No...lol its not the beginning of the end for Apple...geese .....lol their new computers have been out for maybe a year now and they just release new macbooks some months ago. Their computers are still new so no need to have them on the front page since a new product was just released all you have to do is click on another page right above the frontpage and you have all the mac computers.... lol

If this phone really runs OSX and not "pocket OSX" it will be top of my list.... although I may wait for the 80Gb version as I would quicky fill 8Gb. I love the full sized screen - its something the iPod video so obviously needed.
Sure iTunes uses nasty DRM - but if this is a computer (not a souped up PDA) thats easy to fix : instal some other software that plays MP3s :-D
The only other product I know of that comes close is a PDAish sized Sony Vaio that runs XP. Its pricey, but the biggest problem is that there is no provision for phone calls. Its big too so carrying it and a phone is just too much.
I have wanted a pocket sized PC/phone for years. PDAs don't do enough, and my pockets don't need the burden of a phone and PDA either...

APPLE is GREAT at marketing but their products S-U-C-K.

I had dropped my brand new ipod nano from a treadmill running at 7mph. It bounced once on the treadmill and then onto the ground. Result? Still works perfectly, not even a scratch.

You've been able to get a big shiny 'start' button on phones and pdas for quite a while now. If anything Apple are the ones playing catchup to MS, though there are plenty of other mobile devices running embedded linux/unix too.
The iphone looks pretty funky though, if the phone quality is any good.

I hope you are right, but when do you think I can run Photoshop on an iPhone? I'm looking to replace my aging PowerBook and was holding out for MacWorld to find out if they'd announce a new MacBook Pro. They still haven't replaced the PowerBook 12", while every other computer maker has at least one really lightweight (like 3lbs) laptop. Well, they announced no new computers and even took the word computer out of the company name. Like I say, that's not a good sign for those of us who depend on Mac computers.

Have you used WinCE (appropriately - "wince") it is not windows by a long stretch. The applications are all cut down which means compatabilty problems. The usb port is set up so the PDA is a peripeheral not a host so it wont do basic stuff like connect to an external memory card reader, camera, DVD burner etc. You cannot take a program that runs on your PC and run it on your PDA. Honestly I would prefer something that ran Win98....
If the iPhone runs true OSX all of this should work well. Sure software will run slower and be limited by screen size but proper compatabilty takes the device to a whole new level.
Show me a linux phone that comes close to the iPhones specs (full sized touchscreen, 8Gb drive... 80GB even better, pocketable, affordable, usuable battery life, made by someone reputable so it survives more than 5 mins and is covered under warranty if it doesn't) and I would be interested. The ones I have seen have been toys not computers. Then again Linux won't run photoshop... and The Gimp is not a true match...
If it runs OS X regular, not a cut-down version, then it opens up an intersting possibility - a future version of the iphone could double up as a mac-mini - all you need is a docking station with display/keyboard/mouse

I might finally have found a replacement for my old PalmPilot. But I think it is too much. Don't care about the movie feature, or even the iPod (which I always found to be overrated POS).

WinCE was quite a while ago. I've been developing OSes & processors for phones for around a decade so I have a rough idea what's going on. The iPhone is going to maybe look like OS-X, but it'll have to be cut down and restricted.
For one, it is really doubtful that it'll be running an x86 processor in there, so any notion of 'compatibility' is out of the window from the get-go. I'd guess some sort of ARM processor - TI or probably Samsung for the apps & video processors. That and the completely different UI, I/O devices, screen etc and you've got something maybe with the OS-X shiny veneer and some decent sync capabilities and that's it. It'll be BSD under the hood and some port of aqua on the front end, but won't run anything from the desktop world unless its re-written/ ported.
But that isn't why people would buy this, they'll buy it because it has a cool UI and is a decent phone (assuming it is) that integrates iPod functionality. It's also finally a video iPod with a screen that isn't stupidly small - and with a claimed 5 hour battery life, that's pretty darn good.
