Less specific ideas, but they'd stretch people's imaginitive skills, and probably move us away from the deisner images towards real communication a little.

How about an opposite challenge where you shoot something completely different for you - like if you always shoot a technically perfect photo, try something a little blurry and off center, if you always shoot flowers, try some old rusty junk, etc...
There are many boundaries in our world. Shoot something that speaks to these transitions, borders, edges.
Totally made me think of the ladybug on the rim of the glass. :)

I "third" the idea of Magazine Covers again with full editing. Would be interesting, and I'd certainly take a different approach so it's not exactly a repeat.
One that we had to do in photography class 1.5 million years ago was "make something ugly beautiful." You could call it Ugly -> Beautiful.
Description: take something that would generally be considered ugly and show it off in its best light -- make us see beauty there!
Something like that. An example: my photo for that project was some mold that I let grow in the fridge till it was nice and furry, then I placed the dish on a linen tablecloth and added flowers etc. to make it look like a dining magazine cover. The prof thought it looked appetizing, till I told him what it was. :)
More brainstorms, sorry if they've been done in the past:
Round -- Show us roundness, however you want to express it.
All Smiles -- Get em to say cheese and shoot a smile or two!
What the Heck? -- Make us say "I don't know what the heck that is, but I like it." (I've commented that a few times in recent challenges, could be similar to abstract but doesn't need to be)
Natural Logos -- Find a shape in nature that looks just like a real company's logo. Name the company as your title. (Example: a cloud looks like a Nike swoosh, so you title the photo "Nike")
Light -- No need to argue in the forums, just interpret the word however you want.

or Natural Letters, like the Natural Numbers challenge. Go out and find letters in the world (though not necessarily limited to, say, plants and animals and rocks and such). Maybe 'Accidental Letters', to more explicitly allow urban interpretation?
Just thought of another Challenge topic. Urban Legends. Portray your favorite urban legend in the form of an image. And as always title it to give the voters a hint as to the subject matter.

We had a challenge called "superstitions and urban legends" awhile back. I did not enter it as my camera was being repaired. I did however make an appearance in my wife's photo.
Note -- any italics are personal commentary, not part of the description.
I wouldn't mind seeing any of the first several challenges revisited.
Sacred Places -- Churches, Synagogue, Temples, Nature. Photograph a place sacred to you.
Holidays -- Make a photographical representation of your favorite holiday.
Flags -- They represent people, places, and things. Using your camera, "represent" a flag. (Hey, if nothing else, it would keep the forums active all week!)
Country Life -- Take your best shot at depicting life in the country. (Don't wanna hear any, "I live in the city, stuff" I participated in the "City Life" challenge, you can handle the country one!)
Relaxation -- Take a picture representing relaxation.
Soft Focus -- Use this technique in an effective way to convey a message to your viewer.
White on white -- (No description, lets just see what happens!)
Grace -- A swan's appearance, a relgious tenet; photograph something that personifies or represents grace.
Literary Adventure -- Photograph a scene, title, characterization, or quote from a book.
History Alive -- Make an event in history become real again.
School Days -- Take us back to the "good ole golden rule" days! Photograph something that represents education.

I saw it a bit further down the thread, but I second the idea of a Water challenge.
Other suggestions:
Money -- Capture an image representing money.
In the garden -- Compose a photograph related to the garden. May have to wait until fall/spring to offer similar opportunities to both hemispheres. Flight -- Photograph something in flight, either man-made or natural.
And while we're entertaining the thought of an unlimited editing challenge, how about this:
Panoramas -- Take your best shot at creating a panorama using an aspect ratio of 1:3 (height:width) or greater. Feel free to modify the description and requirements. My thoughts are that not only could the print be cropped from a larger image, this challenge would also open the ability to use image stitching software. For those that aren't aware, there are several free trials out there that would get anyone through the challenge. In fact, one came with the last PopPhotography.
